Peter had put off Darla taking him to church for as long as they had been together but today was a different situation. With the baby coming, and Samuel's recent treatment... she begged him.
"Pastor Randall, this is my husband Peter." Darla pulled Peter forward into the small office space.
"Hello Peter, Darla has told me a lot about you." He stuck out a large brown hand to Peter and he hesitantly took it. As if this hand shake would force him to convert to Christianity.
"Darla has told me a lot about this place." Peter wanted to say that Neverland is real and if you can't believe that, then I can't believe in an invisible man in the sky but Darla begged him to not bring up Neverland. She needed him to at least try and see what Randall could tell him about God.
"My dad is dying," she had stated. "The very least you can do for me," she had batted her mascara covered eyelashes at him, "is to talk with Pastor Randall." Peter had agreed without another word. He had put this off long enough anyway.
Peter looked around the bland office as he adjusted in his seat.
"So, Darla would you mind giving Peter and I a moment alone?" Peter reached for Darla's arm, panic in his eyes.
"Sure," she said patting Peter's head and walking out of the tiny room.
"But-" Peter started but Darla was gone and he was alone with Randall. "So..."
"Where would you like to start?"
"Me?" Peter laughed "Where would you like to start?" Peter countered and sat up straighter. He was doing this for Darla, and for his unborn child.
An hour later Lacy Turner, a tall, thick woman with jet black hair came barging into the room crying.
"Oh it's been a year. Today marks a year..." she said sobbing, falling into the chair next to Peter, pulling three tissues from Pastor Randall's desk.
"Can we continue this conversation another time, Peter?" Randall asked as he stood to shake Peters hand goodbye.
"Yes, of course." Peter moved from around the chair, "Thank you, that was... very enlightening."
"It was my pleasure Peter. You are a very lucky man to have such a special woman like Darla in your life."
"Yes, yes I am."
"I can't believe he's been gone a full year! I thought we would find." Peter paused listening to her cries. He moved outside the door, leaving it a crack open as he placed his ear against the door.
"He was a bad man and the police are still looking and we are all still praying for him."
"It's no hope, he took my baby and I'm never going to see him again!" She was hysterical but with good reason. Her boyfriend had got her pregnant and she wanted to keep the baby, she thought that no man would ever love her again. Then she thought God was punishing her for having sex before marriage, by taking away her son. Her boyfriend James said he didn't want kids, he said he didn't want anything to do with them, kids were vermin and he stopped off. But then he came back, about 8 years later, he looked exactly the same. Lacy couldn't help but think that he hadn't aged a day. He saw the boy, his son at her side and then her son was gone.
"Let me pray for you," Randall reached for hand, "Dear lord..." Peter moved closer to the door, listening through the small gap.
"Hey, you done?" Peter jumped seeing Darla approach from the church atrium down to the conference rooms with her mom and a gift basket filled with food for her dad and baby products for Darla.
