"You want to go home Darla? Oh hello Ari, I didn't see you there" Peter did see her but didn't want to sit and chit chat. "Come along, I shall return you." Darla didn't move, she just stood staring at Ari, the mermaid. "Darla" Peter said grabbing at her arm again, she let him move her away from the mermaid but she wasn't quite ready for this daydream to end.
"Can I meet Tinkerbell?"
"You want to meet Tink again?"
"Yeah, she was always my favorite character."
"You believe in fairies?"
"Well, yeah." She walked as Peter held her elbow guiding her to his tree house. Peter whistled and Tink appeared again. Peter was going to make introductions again but Darla was ready this time.
"Hello Tinkerbell. I wanted to say that you are my favorite." Tink uncrossed her arms and swooped low next to Darla. "I fell in love with fairies when I was little because of you." Tink gave a small delicate jingle and landed on Darla's shoulder. Peter looked insulted that Tink choose Darla over him but also a bit impressed that Darla got Tink to like her so quickly.
"Tink," Peter started but she jingled loudly silencing him.
"Ha. She likes me better." Darla mocked as she started to walk away with Tink. Peter stood still in amazement and watched them walk off. Darla went from thinking this was all fake, to getting drenched by Ari and now, Peter started to follow them, she was befriending Tinkerbell? Peter shook his head in disbelief as he saw Tink jingle with laughter.
"What possibly could they be talking about?" Peter muttered.
"You." Darla said obviously hearing him.
"What about me? You barely know me!" Peter ran to catch up, this girl was something else, something unlike any Darling girl.
Darla watched Peter fly up and around the trees and she knew her mind must be tricking her. But, then he swooped her up and she couldn't come up with anything logical so she thought this must be real or a very, very vivid dream...
Darla flew her hand interwoven with Peter's as he lead them back to Illinois. It would have taken hours upon hours to get back to Illinois if they were taking an airplane but somehow flying by fairy dust made things go faster.
"That was all real?" Darla questioned again and again still unable to fathom the idea that she had actually been to Neverland. Peter Pan was her favorite fairy tale and now she had been to Neverland...
"Yep." Peter replied with a grin as he released her hand and just floated. He watched her unsteadily fly closer and closer to the ground. "You will get a hand of flying the more you do it." Peter informed her as he helped her land.
"So does that mean I will see you again?" Peter smiled to himself as he walked Darla home, she liked him. "Will I ever get to go back?" She questioned further.
"Do you want to?"
She didn't hesitate at all when the word 'yes' expelled from her mouth and Peter couldn't help but smile wide as well.
"You don't just like me because I'm the most amazing person ever right?"
"Amazing meaning that you are a fairy tale character come to life?"
"Well it's not a fairy tale, it is real, it's not fiction." Darla still thought he was just an illusion. Peter wanted to convince her that everything was real but didn't know how, not yet at least.
"I sort of liked you when we first met, you are cute and corky."
"By cute you mean extremely handsome." Darla shook her head trying to conceal a laugh "and by corky?" Peter rose a brow "you mean..."
"Adorkable"
"Adorkable?" Peter questioned as he walked Darla back up to her door.
"Adorable and dorky." She explained while reaching for the door knob.
"I like that," Peter said pulling Darla back down a few steps before reaching the door. "I want to be the only person you call adorkable."
"So I can see you again?"
"What are you doing tomorrow?" He asked, fingers pulling at his worn pockets. Darla didn't know if this was real, she hoped it was because Peter was unlike anyone she had ever met. Maybe it was because he was fictional or maybe it was because he didn't care what others thought of him. He just wanted to have fun and he wanted to be with her...
Darla gave a nod, a promise of tomorrow and Peter pecked her cheek with a kiss, Peter had learned the difference between kisses and thimbles a long time ago and was glad he did.
"Goodb-" Darla started but Peter held his fingers to her lips.
"Never say goodbye, because goodbye means going away and away means forgetting and I don't want to forget you." Peter slowly removed his hand from her lips and she smiled at him.
"Goodnight... Peter Pan," she added, her cheeks blushing a violent red as she closed the door.
And that was the start of Peters next love. He knew that after Wendy he didn't want to get attached to anyone like he did with her but he was more mature now and missed having a Wendy. Darla reminded him of her in certain ways. The way her brain was on fire with knowledge, or the way that the mermaids didn't like Wendy either. The way she lit up when she really believed that Neverland might be real. But she was also nothing like Wendy. Peter took his time flying home, he would be back tomorrow even though he didn't want to leave at all. Wendy was bossy, Darla was sassy, Wendy hated Tink, while Darla loved Tink. Peter listed all the pros of Darla and he only just met her today. She was incredible and stubborn and Peter couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.
