"Where is she?" Darla's mom said as she saw Peter pacing in the in hall.
"There was a complication"
"What kind of complication?" She rang her hands together moving past Peter to look in the empty room. "Where is she?"
"She is in surgery. They had to do a C-section, the baby's umbilical cord was wrapped around his head.""His?"
"Oh no, I don't know, I was just guessing." She nodded and looked down the hall at baby pictured walls. She heard babies cries and mothers labor induced screams.
"I thought she went into labor?" She said suddenly confused and irritated.
"She did. Why?"
"They found a complication this early?"
"She was bleeding, they did an ultrasound and-"
"Oh," she said, the syllable silenced Peter. After a long uncomfortable pause she spoke, "I am going to be a grandma." A tear of joy dripped down her face and she reached for Peter's hand. "I know we didn't like you at first..." well she is being very up front with him, now was not the time for her to hate him for Darla's complication, even though he had nothing to do with it. They didn't like him but now that he was giving them a grandbaby maybe. "We didn't approve of you for a long while," Peter knew that oh to well, but he understood, "but you make my baby happy." Stacey said that as if all was alright, Peter took this as a mutual understanding that he was not an outsider that he was loved, that he was family.
He was a fairy tale character come to life, basically perfect, she couldn't do better unless prince charming came to life as well. The thought made Peter laugh, he was far from perfect and her parents would never know who he really was, they were conventional, and not a fan of Darla's love for fiction. But as Peter's mother in law, Stacey held on to Peter's cold shaking hands, he wanted to tell them everything. Darla's parents would understand. Besides, he wanted them to know about all their adventures to Neverland and what fun their grandson or daughter would have all the time. He wanted them to come to Neverland to visit, so the lost boys and girls could have fake grandparents. But he didn't say anything, he just stood and smiled at her as she gripped his hand with all her strength.
Time passed so slowly Peter thought it froze all together. But he checked his watch and saw that it indeed was still working. When in Neverland the watch froze in place but Darla thought that if he were to stay in the 'real world' he needed to be timely. But what good was time when all he was doing was waiting. Waiting was agonizing and certainly not fun. Peter might be a grown up but he still hated grown up things. Darla taught him to do taxes and pay bills. She taught him how to properly buy groceries because cookies and candy was not a suitable meal. She had taught him so much, all the bland boring things about being a regular human. At first he didn't like it but now he made fun out of it. All the stupid little things that everyone else complained about he found joy in because Darla had taught it to him. But waiting, Darla didn't teach him to wait. Peter thought again... When she made cookies or cupcakes she told him to wait the 13 minutes for them to bake. He was waiting for something much better than a cookie now, he was waiting for his wife and new child. So he sat, a smile plastered on his face, a smile he couldn't contain.
"I'm going to be a dad," he said smiling down to his feet.
Every time the door swung open Peter rose slightly before sitting back down at the realization that it was someone else's wife, baby, husband, someone's something but not Darla.
