Her mother had raised her when she was young, educating her, telling her stories, and being a good mother. She spent the first quarter of her life immersed in ancient blueprints and mathematical calculations. They were the light of each other and an inseparable duo of judgment and sense.
Her mother was a woman of bluntness, sharp remarks, and severely critical critique. But her mother most importantly could see the potential within everything. Her mother could turn a crumbled ruin of a coliseum into a wide landscape of flourishing fauna and sparkling marble, mindless scribbles to an artful masterpiece, but above all. Her mother saw her.
She as in is a person. Annabeth as in a daughter, and princess Chase as in a leader. Her mother was the only one that had ever given her a chance.
"Annabeth, have you ever wondered why the palace gardens look the way it does?" her mother said mindlessly, spinning another story from the past for Annabeth - a toddler- was cradled in the woman's lap.
"Your mother is the sole reason, now. The foolish engineers took none of my advice at first and built the columns with the wrong measurements written by a delusional royal. They shouldn't call themselves engineers if they can not engineer anything right." Her mother scoffs, good-naturedly.
"They refused my help even afterward the disaster, I had to take some, alternate methods instead. I found out that they have rather a terrible alcohol tolerance, on another note. Of course, the deeds are done, and some of them kept their heads." Her mother has a face of indifference and apathy.
She has copied that look onto her face after so long of torment from hypocrites.
"Mommy's a genius, of course, the kingdom would be collapsing without me. " her mother had said fondly as if she was sharing a secret-it wasn't a secret or an over-exaggeration. Annabeth learned through the hard way that people were just too arrogant to ever acknowledge the truth out loud, even if it threatened their well beings- "their honor" and "dignities" were far too important.
As if! Those brainless bastards, sitting on their arses all day in the position of power just because of a corrupt hierarchy and system that is established in our rotten society.
"Promise me you'll take after my brains instead of that idiot father of yours. Don't tell him I said that, he never admits it out loud." Her mother laughs, slightly bouncing the toddler. Annabeth returns the smile; she was at those times of naivety when the parent's words were truth and the parent's pride was the world. Young her thrived on attention and hopeless fantasies.
She hated how she was when she was younger, nowadays she envied the innocence and seethed at the willful ignorance.
Later, Annabeth's father had died, and her mother soon after disappeared. Rumors of the runaway mistress poisoning her seduced victim spread amongst the little kingdom- spilled wine and trees fell to the wildlife that was the frenzied citizens' words of doom.
Most of the time, she wished that she was beside her mother. She wished on every flower and every star. Hopeless fantasies get ruled out by sheer cold logic over time, and the despair she felt when her mother left quickly drained away, leaving her empty, cold, unfeeling heart behind.
