Ashlyn Cupid was a dark-haired woman with brown eyes. She always wore her hair in a bun and always wore a smile. People usually told Lorelei she was the spitting image of her mother, and both of them would share a smile. But this woman in front of her was not her mother. Sure, she looked exactly like her, but her hair was down, and she was sporting a frown. Lorelei hardly ever saw her mother frown. Even when she was being scolded, there would either be a soft smile or an endearing smile present.

Her father, Richard Cupid, much like her mother had dark hair and a kind smile. He was looking at her now, said smile present on his face. He tapped her mother, who was too busy typing something to look up at the sound of the elevator.

She eventually looked up, and her frown morphed into a smile, much like the one Lorelei knew her for. Was that all fake?

And most importantly: What the fuck was going on?

"Lorelei, darling, come give your mom a hug," Her mother spoke, spreading out her arms. Lorelei looked at her warily and made no move. Her mother frowned, clasping her hands together and sighing as if she was tired of this already. "I suppose you want an explanation."

"Yes, if it's not too much to ask." Lorelei's expression was hardened. Despite the shock of what lay in front of her, she was not stupid enough to fraternize with those that were supposed to be dead. Even if they were her parents.

Especially because they were her parents.

Ashlyn stood up, heels clicking against the tile part of the floor. She walked around the room slowly, running her fingers along the furniture, with Richard following after her like a lost puppy. Lorelei had no time for theatrics though. "Can you just explain?" She asked, arms folded and eyes narrowed.

The woman smiled, taking a seat on a chair and patting the seat next to her. Lorelei hesitated before slowly walking to the chair. She sat down a few inches away from her mom, waiting for her to get on with her explanation. "Where do I start?" Her mother hummed to herself. "Ah yes." She grinned.

You know the moment when it feels like everything has come crashing down and your world has come to a halt? That was how Lorelei felt when her mother told her the story. She told her that her family was the leaders of a gang that had been running for years. The leadership was passed down to Ashlyn, and it would someday be Loreleis.

She sat frozen, unable to believe anything coming from her mother's mouth. Waiting for the moment the cameras would be revealed, and someone would pop out saying it was a joke and that they got her good. Then Lorelei would spend the rest of the time laughing at how gullible she was.

But none of that happened.

Her mom kept on talking, oblivious to Lorelei's internal panic. "And so we had to go into hiding because the law enforcement was too close to our trail. That's why we faked our death. We're sorry for not telling you, Honey, but all reactions had to be real so no one would suspect anything," Her mother said sweetly as if all of this was not insane. As if she had not just shattered Lorelei from the inside out.
