chapter seven•second chance
A light comes from the box. "Peter!" Norman yells, banging on his cell.
"Peter!" I plead, looking at the boy with hope. I can tell that he cares. I can tell that he isn't the same as my Peter.
Peter sighs and webs the box. "Don't!" Strange orders.
Peter grabs the box with his web and then webs Strange to the outside of Sandman's cell. Ned gasps at Peter's actions. What was Parker doing?
He is... saving me over his friend, mentor, whatever Strange is to him.
"Dude, what are you doing?!" Ned exclaims.
"Peter, you better go. Go!" MJ warns with a shout.
Peter takes off running as Strange escapes from the web he was wrapped up in. Sandman also tries to leave, but he smacks into the cell, almost falling over. Strange sighs in annoyance at Peter's actions.
"This is why I never had kids," he mutters.
The two of them moved the fight outside, while the rest of the villains and Peter's friends stand in shock.
I am actually rooting for Peter this time. My fate depends on him. If not, the wizard will kill me. Spider-Man let me down once, and I beg that it won't happen again.
He used to be my hero: I used to want to be just like him. When I realized he wasn't coming to my rescue as the flames engulfed my home, I was heartbroken. And then I became heartless.
Moments later, Peter dives into the room through a portal, the box and a ring in his hand. He looks back into the portal.
"I have to try," he says, panting.
The portal then closes. Ned and MJ run up to Peter. "Dude, what happened?"
"I just had a fight with Doctor Strange and I totally won!" Peter exclaims.
"What?!" Ned gasps.
"Look, I stole his ring thing."
Ned takes the ring off Peter's finger and put it on his instead. "Whoa!" A tiny spark flicks off his fingers.
"I was swinging through the city and then I went through this massive mirror thing. And then I was back in the city."
Peter then pulls his mask off, sweating. I turn my head towards him only slightly, but then look away when I realize that I am staring.
"Where is he? Where is-"
"Uh, he's trapped, but I'm not sure for how long."
Otto raises an eyebrow. "You could have just left us to die. Why didn't you?"
"Cause that's not who he is," MJ says with a proud smile.
"I think I can help you guys. If I can fix what happens to you, then when you go back, things will be different, and you might not die fighting Spider-Man," Peter explains.
"What do you mean 'fix us'?" Max questions.
"Look our technology is advanced and I'm-"
"I can help you. You know, I'm something of a scientist myself Octavius knows what I can do," Norman smiles.
"Show off," I mutter.
"Fix?' You mean like a dog? I refuse," Otto decides.
"I agree," I nod.
Peter looks tired. He seems like he wants to help, but it could just be an act. I don't fully trust Peter, especially because he is a Spider-Man. I couldn't trust my Peter to help me, so why would I trust this Peter?
"I can't promise you guys anything. But at least this way you actually get to go home and have a chance... a second chance. I mean, come on. Isn't that worth trying?"
Peter looks straight at me.
"Trust me, Parker, you can't just magically get a second chance at something. If that was possible, I wouldn't be where I am now," I sigh.
"Synne-"
"You shouldn't call me that."
He stop: talking. "Trust me, Peter. When you try to fix people there are always consequences," Connors says.
"I mean, you don't have to come. I also didn't know you could talk."
Connors shrugs at Peter's statement, "But if you stay here... you're gonna have to deal with the wizard."
"Ah, so we go along or die. Not much of a choice, is it?" Connors scoffs.
"I just want to go home," Sandman says.
Sandman looks the most upset out of everyone. I have no one to go back to anyways. I am living off of revenge. I have no purpose other than getting revenge. It's sad, but it's the truth.
Max crosses his arms. "Well, I myself don't want to be killed, especially by a guy dressed like Dungeons and Dragons, so what's your plan?"
"I have it all under control," Peter replies, clearly lying. I can tell.
He then pulls Ned and MJ aside, whispering to them. After some conversation, MJ has the box in her hand. She seems serious, while Ned stands beside her. I managed to overhear some parts of their conversation. MJ is taking the spelled box with her.
"But Peter, I swear, if I don't hear from you, I'm pressing the button," MJ says, her voice getting louder.
"Sure," Peter smiles.
"Okay."
"And I will do it!" MJ adds, waving the box in the direction of the other villains and I.
"Yeah, we all believe you, Michelle," Max mutters.
"She'll do it," Peter agrees.
"Absolutely. She will," Ned adds.
The friends say their goodbyes, and Peter turns to everyone else. "So, uh... who's coming with me?"
Norman and Otto seem to be considering. I'm not quite sure about trusting a Spider-Man.
"Well, I'm in. If this goes sideways, imma fry you from the inside out," Max threatens.
Everyone is then released from their cell, and most of the villains went outside. I am left alone with Peter. He walks over to me, staring into my blue eyes.
He stands a bit taller than me, and he has the most innocent look on his face. He looks so... pure. Would he really harm me like my Peter did?
"Synne... I don't know if I can call you that or not... Are you coming?" he asks.
"I don't know, Parker. The last time I trusted Spider-Man to help me, I lost everything," I sigh.
"I wouldn't do that to you, ever. I swear. Think about coming, please?"
And with that, Peter walks. off. Why is he so sweet to me? All I ever did was yell at him...
I take a deep breath and run to catch up to Peter. I am going to let him cure me.
