chapter nine•gods don't have to choose

Peter holds a microchip up to May. "I got it. I did it, I did it. Uh... would you send him up?"

"Here we go," May smiles.

Parker is currently trying to cure Otto, but I'm not sure that it will work. After the comfort he gave me only moments ago, my chest feels a little bit lighter.

Otto is struggling with every touch, and he refuses to be cured. How is it that Parker is sure that this will even work? It could kill Otto for all he knows. It could kill me also. Maybe it would kill everyone in the room.

Peter is standing on the stairs above Otto, and tosses his lab glasses to May, but he misses. "Sorry!" he exclaims.

Otto's tentacles lift him up to Peter's level. "Hold on, Doc," May says.

"Oh, will these humiliations never cease?!" Otto complains.

Peter starts to approach Otto. "You! Keep your science fair project away from me!"

Norman looks up at Otto and Peter. "Hey, it'll work. Have faith."

"Says the reckless fool who turned himself into a monster," Otto spurs.

"I suppose you should give the spider a chance," I sigh. I catch Peter smiling.

Otto struggled against Peter's grip. He is not willing to give Peter, or anyone a chance. Maybe once he is cured he will be more willing to trust everyone. But I side with him on this one. Peter doesn't have my full trust yet.

"Please stop moving your head. Hold still," Peter requests.

"Don't you dare."

Everyone watches anxiously as Otto continues to squirm. "I swear, when I get out of this, we're gonna rip you a new-"

He is cut off when a chip is attached to him. Otto's head hangs low and his eyes go blank. He's passed out.

Max looks concerned, just as I am. "Parker, I swear if you killed him-"

Peter is freaking out. "Doc? Doc?! ...Doctor Octavi-"

Otto awakens with a gasp, and he lifts his head in amazement. "It's so quiet. Those voices... inside my head... I'd almost forgotten."

"Otto?" Norman asks.

"Yes, Norman..."

Otto is lowered back onto the ground with his tentacles."It's me." He is smiling for the first time since he was here.

Peter jumps down to the floor everyone else is on. "Impressive, Parker," I comment.

He smiles and his face has turned a bit pink. The can tell that he is proud, and I honestly am proud that it worked too. "Would you look at that," Sandman mutters.

Otto holds out his hand to Peter. "I'm grateful, dear boy. Truly."

As they shake hands, Peter smiles. "Yeah, you're welcome."

"How can I help?

Max already has something hooked up to him, and Sandman is sitting with him. Otto and Norman are in the lab together, and I don't know where May is. I'm sitting down on the couch when Peter sits next to me.

"I told you it would work," Peter says with a little smirk.

"Oh, whatever, Peter."

"You called me Peter."

He's right. I never call a Spider-Man by their real name, because I don't like them. I like to taunt them. I made a mistake.

"What are you talking about, Parker?"
