"I never laugh at death, no matter how often and regularly I am the cause of it."
Winston laughed as he read the sentence as he always laughed when he caused death because he enjoyed it, it made him feel alive, strong, superior and in control. He always needed to feel in control but right now he did not, all thanks to his brother.
His brother and that dog.
He was about to change that, but not right now, later as now he needed to feed.
He'd followed a young man into a bookstore, it was quiet, dark inside and the man smelt intriguing. Winston took a book from the self and pretended to leaf through it as if he was reading.
Humming.
Yes, the humming that was why he'd followed him.
It was the man's humming that had initially caught his attention, his humming reminded him of Jeremiah and oddly enough so did this man, so he followed him to observe more closely.
Unkempt, fuzzy auburn hair, elf like features and he half skipped when he walked.
He resembled Jeremiah.
Winston smiled as he watched him, he loved Jeremiah even though he was currently angry with him, he still loved him.
However, he had no intention turning this man he only wanted to drain him dry, well to mummify him, as he had the time.
The Jeremiah lookalike began to scratch his head as an uneasy feeling suddenly waved over him, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, his heart began to race, he felt as if he was being watched. He turned his head and immediately locked eyes with the man that was watching him, he locked eyes with Winston.
He looked odd; he did not look human.
Vampire.
Lookalike's heart began to quicken.
Winston continued to stare; did he know what he was?
Lookalike's heart began to beat very rapidly.
Winston smiled and stepped forward.
Lookalike stepped back.
Winston glared at him, his skin now almost transparent,
"Hello there," Winston whispered.
"You are not human,"
He did know what he was.
Winston smiled and shook his head.
Lookalike now froze to the spot unable to move.
Winston now ready to attack threw the book he was pretending to read into the air and readied himself to pounce.
Distraction
"Oi you, pick that up."
Winston turned his head and saw an elderly woman pointing at him, he had not noticed her before.
"If its damaged, you'll buy it."
She obviously worked here.
Winston stared back at her.
"You deaf son?" She snapped.
Winston laughed and turned to look towards lookalike who was now nowhere to be seen.
He'd gone.
"No, I am not deaf." He snapped back, now infuriated as his meal was gone.
Winston walked over to the woman, bent down, and stared straight into her eyes.
Crystal.
Her eyes were crystal clear; was she blind?
He waved his hand in front of her face and made rude gestures,
Nothing.
Winston held his head back, put his hands in the air and laughed out loud.
She was blind.
Why in the hell was a blind woman working in a bookstore?
He stepped forward.
So did she.
Did she look familiar?
Winston stepped back.
She smiled and stepped forward again.
She did look familiar.
The roles were now reversing and this he did not like it; he was losing control. "
Stupid blind woman, he thought to himself and stepped back.
"Just because I am blind, it does not mean that I am stupid."
How could she hear his thoughts? "Was her voice familiar?
"Cat caught your tongue vampire?"
Her voice was familiar.
He snarled at her.
"Why do you think I am a vampire?"
"I cannot feel your soul."
Winston's mouth was now wide open.
"Besides you smell, actually you stink like you are rotting."
She cackled and Winston's blood almost froze.
"Mae?" he questioned even though he believed it was not possible as he'd burned her alive, well he thought he'd burned her alive.
The woman just stared back at him.
For the first time in his vampire life the cat had caught his tongue, he was speechless.
She shook her head and then smiled.
"No vampire, I'm not Mae. I am someone else, no, actually I am something else and I've been waiting for you.
Winston scoffed at her and turned to leave.
"For a very long time."
The door to the shop slammed shut right in front of him and he was unable to open it.
Trapped.
He turned back to snarl at the woman, who simply smiled back at him.
"Are you ready?" she asked.
"Ready for what?" he spat.
"Death, your final death."
Her hand now resembled a claw and she pushed it towards his chest causing him to scream.
She smiled as she crouched over him.
"Ready?"
"You cannot touch me, witch,"
She laughed.
He tried to fight her.
"You cannot harm me, I told you."
She laughed back. "I can."
"How, I 'll drain you"
"O baby," she sneered, "I know your name, I know your birth given name."
"You, don't"
She smiled, bent again down, and whispered in his ear.
Inaudible
His eyes went wide.
"No," he screamed. "It's not possible."
"Believe me vampire, it is, you really don't recognise me."
Winston stared at her.
"No."
"Look closer."
Winston peered into her eyes.
"Mother?"
