Her eyes darted back and forth, one second on the unconscious Winston, one second on the phone screen; she had no idea how long she had been doing this but she knew her time was going to run out, he would wake up, eventually.
She was screaming to herself in her mind, 'quickly, quickly, quickly, do it. Do it now.....................'
One second
She couldn't move.
One second
Her heart began to race.
One second
Time is running out.
Rachael was shaking as she held his phone in her hand. Her eyes were constantly flipping back and forth and a different thought crossed her mind or she felt a different emotion along with every tick of the second hand.
She looked at the clock on the wall. The ticking seemed to become louder.
One second
She felt sick
One second
Did he move?
One second
Just call
Rachael took a deep breath and then she took another and then another, 'you can do this,' she mentally told herself.
She began to type in her brother's number into the phone and then she stopped. Was it double nine, four, nine, or double five, it had been so long since she had called him she could not remember. She could not even recall Max's number, she had only ever had to press No.1 speak to him.
Dear Draugluin, she missed them both.
She closed her eyes and mentally let her fingers dial and she groaned when she heard a recorded voice say, 'the number you have dialled has not been recognised, please redial and try again.'
"Damn it," She cursed to herself
She was concentrating so hard, trying to remember her brother's number, so hard she never heard the front door open.
She gasped as she remembered, 'Max took my phone from me that night I was taken, is there any chance he would still have it,' and as she dialled her own number she silently prayed that it would ring and it did.
However it did not ring for long.
She never realised Jay had come back until he snatched the phone from her hand and he pushed her to the floor.
Jay looked at the phone and then at Rachael, he felt a pang of quilt as he eyed her lying there but he did not show it.
"Are you suicidal or are you stupid?" he asked her.
"Desperate," she replied. "I want to go home."
Jay held out his hands and pulled Rachael to her feet as she grasped them.
"Then go."
Rachael looked at the still passed out Winston and then she looked back to Jay.
"I can't, I have no money, passport or any way to leave here. I don't want to make him angry, he will come after me."
Jay laughed.
"I would not worry about my brother, something is coming; someone else is coming for him."
He knew he should not do it but he thought what the hell, it seemed his days were numbered anyway. He placed one hand on Rachael's waist, one behind her head and he pulled her towards him. Before she could even protest or struggle he placed his mouth on hers and began to kiss her.
