For the past few weeks, Steve, and I had been working at Starcourt, the new mall that had opened up during this summer. We both got a job at the ice cream parlor, Scoops Ahoy.

I was still deciding what I wanted to do in college since we had just graduated and Steve hadn't gotten into college. He had said something about 'not getting his grades up before school finished' and that his dad 'wasn't going to pay for his tuition'.

I stuck with him though, and convinced him that we should get a job together, that being Scoops Ahoy.

So here we were working the night shift with Robin Buckley, who had been in both Steve's and my history class in high school. Starcourt was even busier than it usually was on summer nights. I don't think I've ever seen Hawkins this busy in a while. Steve and I were both on our break in the back of Scoops Ahoy. I was reading a Stephen King novel while Steve was eating his dinner next to me at the table.

The chiming of the bell from the front counter pulled my attention away from my book to Robin, who was saying, "Hey, dinguses, your children are here."

Steve and I both looked at each other and sighed. Of course, they were back again. Steve got up from the small table to open the windows that led to the front counter of Scoops Ahoy. "Again? Seriously?" He said to them. It was The Party, who was again using our special privilege as employees to use the employee-only hallways to go to the movies for free.

I put my book down on the table to walk to the back door that led out to a hallway. I opened it so that Mike, Lucas, Max, and Will could take a shortcut to the movie theatre.

I held the door open for them to escape out of. "Come on, come on." They all rushed out and walked quickly down the hallway. "I swear, if anybody hears about this--" I began to say before being cut off by them,

"We're dead!"

I sighed and walked back into the break room, closing the door behind me.

A while later, my break was officially over, and I went back to working with Robin in the front serving customers. Robin was at the register, and I was restocking the ice cream in the counter display.

The lights in the mall slowly went out, and everyone who was inside stopped what they were doing to look around in the darkness. "The hell?" I said, out loud, looking over at Robin before I heard the backroom door swing open. Steve came out of the break room and tried turning on the light switch.

"Oh my god. Seriously?" I asked with a smirk, putting my hand on my hip. Did he really think he'd be the one to turn the power back on magically?

Seeing as that didn't work he began turning the switch off and on repeatedly. "That isn't gonna work, dingus." Robin said, shaking her head.

I looked back over at Steve to watch him play with the light switch.

"Oh, really?" He said to her, he then began turning it on and off faster. That definitely wasn't going to work, but Robin and I stayed quiet.

After a few seconds of Steve playing with the light switch, the lights in Scoops Ahoy finally turned back on and subsequently, the whole mall's lights turned back on too. "Let there be light." He said before opening the door and walking back into the break room. Idiot.

I turned to look at Robin and smiled and shook my head, and she did the same as we both went back to work.

The next day Steve, Robin, and I were working the day shift together. Steve was now serving customers, and Robin and I were together in the back playing Go Fish with a deck of cards.
