You had always hated school. Not because most of the subjects were boring - well it was part of that too - but because you never when your father. With him, you were never scared. You felt safe. Because you know that no matter what happens, he will understand you and do his best to help you. And most of all, he knew what to do when you had a seizure. At school, it was different. Disability is not very much spoken of. It felt like it was a taboo for most people, even the teachers. So were educated on the subject, and some others were not. It was very stressful and irritating as you felt like you were different and that it was bad. But of course, it was not. Differences are not bad at all.
The problem at school was that, as the majority of people were able-bodied when one is disabled, it felt like a joke to them. They felt like you were lying, because to them, disabilities were something very foreign and unknown. They were so detached and unaware of this, that they struggled to believe it. And that was exactly what you experienced today. This feeling of not being heard, this feeling of being taken as a joke, this feeling of being invalidated. All that because of your ignorant teacher.
You were sitting at your desk when the discomfort was slowly taking over you. At first, you brushed it off, thinking it was just exhaustion after a day of school. After all, only two hours were left before the end of the day. Though, you were then gradually struggling to ear right. It was as if your head was underwater, your earing was obstructed, muffled. That was when you knew what was going to happen. And the stiffness of your muscled only confirmed it.
You shut your eyes closed, clenching your jaw as you tried to keep your calm. The best thing to do was to ask to leave for a moment. That way, you would call your father and he would know what to do. You never had a seizure during a class and you didn't want this one to be a first. The problem was that you knew this specific teacher was not the kind one. He was always strict, never letting any students the time or the opportunity to explain themselves. Though this time, you hoped it would be a different scenario.
So you lifted your hand, trying to maintain the already little focus you had.
"Sir...," you asked, fighting the dizziness.
Your sight became fuzzy as if everyone was moving slowly and covered in a soft blur. It was as if being in a dream, or being lightheaded. But you still managed to notice all the eyes were on you.
On the opposite side of the class, on tall and dragon tattooed boy was looking at you. It didn't take him long to understand the situation. He noticed the frown on your brow, he noticed how you were constantly shutting your eyes closed and opening them as if fighting to stay awake, he noticed the weakness of your voice. He knew what you were going through because it was not foreign to him. He had already witnessed it before.
"What is it, Y/N?" The teacher asked.
"Can I go to the infirmary, please...," you quietly asked. "I don't feel so good...,"
"Can't it wait until the end of the lesson?" He asked. You could hear the slight annoyance in his voice. You clenched your jaw harder. You knew the teacher would react this way.
"I'm having a seizure...," you said as dizziness was taking over you. The lighting in the ceiling was now attacking your eyes. It felt like you were staring right at the sun, the light flashing brightly in your eyes. "I have... epilepsy...,"
"You seem fine to me," he frowned, not believing you.
"Obviously, he doesn't," Draken scoffed, earning a glare from the teacher.
You were glad Draken was there. He was the only person giving you the strength and reassurance to go to school. He was your childhood friend and he had always been there for you. He knew about your condition and he had never been judgemental towards you. It was the complete opposite. He had always been supportive, trying to help you the best. Despite him being a delinquent, he had a good, great heart.
"Epileptic seizures are not only jerking of the body, ya know," Draken said.
"Y/N never mentioned having epilepsy before," the teacher said.
"Because you would shout it to everyone if you had?" Draken frowned, irritated. "I mean, it's personal and if he doesn't want to talk about it, that's his right. You shouldn't even be questioning such a thing in the first place, old man,"
"Ryuguji-"
But you suddenly stood up and left the class. You ignored the calling of your teacher and stumbled into the empty corridor. Your hearing was muffled, your head fuzzy as your sight was blurred. It was as if walking in slow-mo in the middle of a thick fog. Limbs stiffed, you pushed open the restroom door open and leaned on the wall, sliding down to sit. Your breath was shaky, heavy, and your limbs slightly twitching. Dizziness became even stronger as flashes of light blinded you. All you could do was wait for it to pass. All you could do was sit on the cold floor, fighting to keep your mind awake. You wished the teacher would have listened to you, it would have avoided the unnecessary anxiety. You wished people were not jerks.
Suddenly, you felt a hand on your shoulder. Then, you were pulled in a hug, the arm of the person next to you wrapping around your shoulders. You relaxed a bit under this familiar comfort and support. You didn't have to look up to know who it was. It was Draken, your closest and most supportive friend. You unconsciously leaned into the embrace as he caressed your arm. You could hear him talk, though you struggled to make out his words.
After seeing you leaving the classroom under the surprised eyes of the teacher, Draken did not hesitate a second to follow after you while taking your backpack on the way. He knew he could do much for you in these moments but he still wanted to be there for you, not wanting you to feel alone. When he got to you, he took your phone that was in the front pocket of your bag and dialed the number of your father. Waiting for him to answer, he muttered some sweet and encouraging words.
"Y/N? Aren't you supposed to be in class?" Your father said on the other side of the line.
"Huh... actually it's Draken,"
"Eh? Draken? Why do you have my son's phone?" Your father asked, worried.
"Could you come to school?" Draken asked. "Y/N is having a seizure?"
"What?!" Your father explained. Draken heard the sound of something falling, telling him your father must have bolted up from his seat. "What happened?"
"Teacher's an ass," Draken said with gritted teeth. "Didn't want to let Y/N got to the infirmary. Now we're in the first-floor bathroom,"
"He's gon' hear about me," your father muttered, annoyed. "I'm on my way,"
Yeah, school sucks. But at least you had Draken. And the thought of your teacher getting his ass kicked by your father was very comforting.
