the problem.

The theory holds that computers will get so complex and so powerful they could simulate reality. In fact, there's a good chance we are in a simulated reality right now. What then? What does any of this matter?

the Zen understanding.

Because a Zen Buddhist doesn't recognize a world of fundamental or indivisible things, such as souls in the common conception, if we are in a simulated reality it is irrelevant.

A Zen Buddhist doesn't find meaning in our world because it is "the most real," because a Zen Buddhist doesn't recognize anything as more or less real than anything else. A Zen Buddhist finds meaning in the world because we can act compassionately. The Bodhisattva's path is possible where there is a choice to be compassionate, and there is no reason to believe we don't have that choice and every reason to believe that we do.

One can fear they have no choice, but this is exactly that: fear, a dangerous ignorance indeed.

the Zen application.

With this understanding, a Zen Buddhist remains unaltered in their approach. We continue to live with compassionate co-being. With sound reason we do not worry and we do not fear.
