Since I've lost my memory, I consider this my very first flight. Travelling alone is nerve-wracking and this 15 hour flight duration multiplied the anxiety that is accumulating in my body.
At last! The sensation of my sole touching the ground is heavenly. Welcome to San Francisco International Airport. It feels weird, I see people on a regular basis but I feel like this is actually the first time that I've seen one. I'm very weary to something that should be familiar. This must be what it feels like being a foreigner.
My head's uneasy, I kept looking left and right, just like a kid looking for her mommy. Different kinds of thought kept pestering my brain - what if no one is here to fetch me? Where should I go? What if the people here are not nice?
I kept walking while pulling my bag. I don't know where to go.
Maybe I should go outside.
Anxiety got the better off me, I can't find the strength to lavish this very first travel of mine.
This is so not me, and it is frustrating. I can't believe that the president of the prestigious Ecclesiastes University will cower in this unknown land.
"Welcome to California, Miss Soberano." a man said while touching my shoulder.
My train of useless thoughts were interrupted by the man who approached me. I didn't even notice how he was suddenly so near to me.
"E-excuse me?" I stuttered.
"Did I startle you?" the man asked. "Sorry. My name's Stephen Morris. I'm here to fetch you." he said while showing his identification card.
He's from the Bureau of Investigation. He's tall, around 6'2"in height, a voice so mellow but with conviction, he's white and blonde. If I have to guess, he is in his forties. He must be the chief of the bureau or something.
He then quickly got my belongings and put it inside the compartment of the car that's in front of us.
"I know you're in jet lag but we need to go straight away to our office first. Sherlock Holmes is already waiting for you." he said.
"She-Sherlock Holmes?" once more, I stuttered.
I don't know what's going on anymore. Everything seems so fast. I've been knowledgeable in English ever since but it feels like I can't understand what he's saying. Sherlock Holmes?! Did I hear it right? Am I dreaming? Of course I know the name Sherlock Holmes and I also know that that name should only stay in fictional stories. Is this a movie shoot or something?
"Little girl?" Stephen said. "We don't have much time. Sherlock values his time more than lives."
I heard that name 'Sherlock' again, so I guess I didn't misheard it the first time.
Feeling confused, I still went inside the car. I just need to go with the flow. This must be the effects of jet lag that I can't seem to process anything.
"This won't take long. Sherlock just wants to see you first before I drive you to your hotel. I believe you already know the details of this case. We need your help Miss Sheiy."
It's interesting that Stephen Morris called me by my nickname. I can't really underestimate the way they gather information.
"S-sir, this is really bugging me, but what do you mean by Sherlock Holmes?" I inquired profusely.
Stephen began to laugh "I know, I know." then he laugh again. "I was also confused when I first heard that name. 'This must be a joke or something' I thought."
"So is this really a prank?" i asked.
"No.'
"When I say Sherlock Holmes, I mean Sherlock Holmes." he continued. "Of course he's not the Sherlock Holmes that we know on Arthur Conan Doyle's novel because he's not real. But think of it this way - Sherlock could be anyone that has a superior mind. And this is definitely the case with the person you're about to meet. And perhaps, even better than the fictional Sherlock Holmes." he said in a serious tone.
