tap tap tap

The rust. The grime. The moldy smell.

Tap Tap Tap

My mouth is dry. My body is weak.

TAP TAP TAP

Black, tar like, liquids are splattered onto the floor. My head is spinning.

TAP TAP TAP

A door opens. A pair of piercing blue eyes open suddenly.

"Y/N! HUNTER'S HERE!" Hooty bursts through my window.

I jolted awake covered in a cold sweat. The sharp gasp I take in causes me to cough. I look to my side where Hooty is smiling happily, inches from my face. I glare at him, causing his smile to fall.

"Hooty!" I whisper shout. "What have I told you about screaming while I'm sleeping?"

"That you'll- uh- beat me up if I do it again..." He slowly starts backing out the window.

"Bingo." I growl, pulling my bed covers off me.

With a yelp, Hooty hurries back to the door of the house. I rush to the window to try and follow him. Once at the window, my gaze catches on Hunter. I stop abruptly, falling back in the process.

"Hunter!" I screech.

He jumps through the window and helps me up off the ground. After making sure I'm okay, he takes a step back.

"When did you get here?" I chuckle nervously.

"Just a few minutes ago. Didn't you hear Hooty say that?"

"I tune out most things he says before 10." I shrug.

"So...how are you doing?" Hunter changes the subject.

"Sore, traumatized, emotionally exhausted, but otherwise good." I count on my fingers as I list.

"And, your curse?" He looks worried.

I flip my arm. Hunter and I both look at my gem. It's still mostly black.

"Looks like I won't be able to do much magic." My voice is somber and sad.

"Oh, Y/n..." Hunter sighs out sadly. "I'm sorry Belos did this to you. I don't know why he did it, but I'm sure there was a good reason."

"A good reason?" My eyebrows furrow, anger rising up as Hunter tries to justify Belos' actions. "Hunter, he-" I cut myself off.

He doesn't know any better. It's not worth arguing about, especially this early in the morning.

"Look, I know you don't like Belos and I understand why, but he really is trying to do a good thing." Hunter tries to explain.

I take a deep breath and run a hand through my hair.

"Okay, Hunter." I breathe out. "I'd just rather not think about it."

"Right, of course." He nods. "Well, I need to get going, but I wanted to remind you to stay inside. This place is crawling with scouts, and without your magic you're defenseless."

"Hunter, I know self defense." I fold my arms. "Magic isn't my only weapon."

"Oh...right. I just-uh-I meant..." His face flushes as he sputters out hopelessly. "With the scouts having magic I would feel better knowing you were here where it's safer."

"Sure, Hunter." I agree, growing tired of this conversation. "It's not like I have anything better to do."

"Good!" He smiles. "I've gotta go before the scouts come this way, but," He closes the gap between us and cups my head in his gloved hands. "don't be too sad. I'll figure this out."
