They had been on the island for less than forty-eight hours when Jax had called with the news.

"I'm a horrible fucking son," Jax announced in place of a greeting.

"What are you talking about?" Opie cradled his phone on his shoulder while he fixed a loose wire on one of the motion detectors on the side door. They'd had pretty killer winds the previous night, and he and Juice had been doing minor repairs all day.

"I don't think my mom's working with Clay. Bobby did a bit more digging on her accounts. She never personally accessed any of them. It looks like a fake paper trail...."

"Made to look like Gemma turned on us." Opie got to his feet and devoted his full attention to the conversation. This changed everything. They'd gone from a betrayal to a possible hostage situation, which was bad enough on its own. But they'd been making moves like Gemma was calling the shots, not Clay, and the husband and wife operated very differently. Which is precisely what Clay had counted on when he grabbed the club's dowager queen. So far, they had played right into the enemy's hands, and a horrible thought struck him. "Jax, how much does Clay know about the island? Does he know Sonny uses it as a safe house for his family?"

"Fuck!" Jax yelled. "Yeah, he fucking knows!"

Opie was silent for a moment as he thought. The lighthouse that Sonny had paid to refurbish had been lit for the first time the previous night. And it had been windy, and the sea was choppy but not unsailable. All the 'wind damage that he and Juice had repaired had been on the house's advanced security system...

"Jax, man, I got a bad feeling that Clay might already be on the island." He kept his voice low as he casually started to head back into the house just in case he was being watched. "Get out here, now. I'll call you back from the sat phone." He quickly hung up.

He found Juice in the kitchen with Avery's uncle Lucas, and he told them both what was happening. Juice was told to take cameras and motion sensors to the location that Opie had chosen to lock the family safely down. He instructed Lucas to get with Emily and pack up as much of the emergency medical equipment as possible.

Finally, Opie gathered Avery and the family together in the living room. "We think Clay might be on the island." Before anyone could speak, he held up his hand to stop them. "I'll explain everything, but right now, I need everyone to head down to the lighthouse as casually as possible. Act like we're all going down there to hang out."

Opie wasn't sure if it had been Sonny's intention when he had fixed it up, but the lighthouse served as the perfect safe house on top of the natural safe house that was the island. It was made of stone with only one entrance/exit that was equipped with a heavy steel door made to withstand hurricanes. To protect his grandchildren from the dangers of the ocean and the rocks it crashed into, he had installed an eight-foot-high chainlink fence that was reinforced with concrete. It blocked the lighthouse off from the rest of the pier and created a small courtyard that could only be accessed from a single gate. It was the perfect fortress.
