Show me something, a sign of something beyond the veil
It's hard to tell, It's hard to move
My road is hard to see
It all seems dark to me
I know this all just needs
Transparency

Before - 16 years old, High school

"I have a date," Ava announced.

Alex paused the game and put the console aside. The words had been sudden and taken him by surprise. None of the guys had mentioned that they asked her out. Whoever it was, he was going to kill them. Alex drew a line at talking about her like an object.

Each day he nearly cut his ears off when they talked about Ava's long legs and her gifted chest. Every other day it seemed that someone new found her attractive. Alex had learned to put earphones in when the guys started talking about her.

What was worse was that none of them ever had the guts to do it to her face. Her no nonsense and saying exactly what she thought, terrified them all. Which often left them to ask Alex to speak to her. He hated it but at the same time, he embraced the thought that if predators approached her, he would always know. So who was this guy who broke the mould? Was he a good guy?

"When?"

"Tonight."

"Isn't that soon?"

"Too soon for what?" Ava asked. "Also, aren't dates to get to know the person so can it truly be too soon? Besides, I don't really like him like that, I just want him to help me with my virginity problem."

"What the hell, Ava?" Alex huffed coming to his feet. "Your virginity is not a problem. Who is even this guy?"

"I met him through Hank's brother."

"So he is older than us?"

Ava frowned. "By two years. What's the big deal?"

"Guys are not nice, Ava."

Ava smirked. "That's exactly my point. I want him to do not so nice things to me."

"Ava, no!"

"I wasn't asking for permission. I was just letting you know as my best friend."

"And as your best friend, I'm telling you that you're making a mistake."

"Like when you had sex with Claire? You didn't exactly tell me."

Alex's face paled. "How did you find out?"

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Alex shook his head, coming to a realisation. "Is that why you are doing this? Because I have one up on you?"

Ava rolled her eyes and left the room. It was just like her to walk away from him when he had her figured out. Alex didn't know why he didn't tell her but her making it a competition was a part of it. From a young age, both their parents bought them the same gifts.
