'Cause I remember every time
On these days that feel like you and me
Heartbreak anniversary
Do you ever think of me?

Giveon- Heartbreak anniversary

Before— 19 years old, undergrad

Ava expected a lot of things from Alex but she had never thought he would be the one to break her heart. Perhaps that's why she had given him everything without thought. The shocking part of Alex's actions hadn't been their breakup.

It was his lack of attendance to the Skiing holiday. His family had been held back waiting for his father to return from his business trip and Ava's parents had asked for her to come back as planned. Her mother was pretty adamant about the days of the calendar when Ava was supposed to return home. She had tried to argue and failed.

Her mother had merely said, "You see Alex 360 days in a year. Do you want me to start restricting that time?"

"I am nineteen," Ava argued back although each bone in her body didn't want to.

"If your father and I are still paying your way, you'll give us at least this much. Are we asking for too much?"

Yes, they were. Ava didn't want to leave Alex when things were like this. She was already doing her best to not fall apart in front of Alex's mother. "I'll come back."

"Now was that so difficult," Caroline James asked. "You'll see Alex in a few weeks."

The issue wasn't seeing him. He seemed to be avoiding her. Ava wanted to plead her case and he wasn't allowing her. He had to be around for them to reach some arrangement which would suit them both. Ava told herself that it was a few days. That's all he needed.

When his mother told her that he had been out to hang out with his friends from college, Ava hadn't asked who or called him. When he returned late at night, she didn't go to his room.  He hurt her and in his logical mind he was giving her space. Space was the last thing that she needed or wanted from him. Ava gave in trying not to make a scene with his mother around. Only, Alex wasn't there on the day of her departure.

"His grandfather came over last night while you were sleeping and we didn't want to wake you," Alex's mother uttered with a wistful smile. "He said he would call you."

"He went to France with Pierre?" Ava whispered the words out.

"No, my father came back and took Alex  with him. My father is rarely around this side of the continent so they decided to use the time wisely." Alex's mother pulled Ava into her motherly chest and hugged her tightly. "You'll see each other very soon."

Ava broke down then. "You and my parents are conspiring together, are you?"

Alex's mother laughed, brushing her hands over Ava's back. "Conspiring to do what?"

"To keep us apart?"

"After spending seven years in my house, do you still I would want to keep you apart? That battle was lost when you were kids."
