❖Carl Grimes did not think he could live without Elle Coleman. It was such an obscure idea that he had never even thought of how he would react. The only time he had come close was when she was taken by the Governor, both times.
Carl and Elle were a packaged deal and he wasn't sure how anyone expected him to move on when a piece of him disappeared. She was gone. How gone, he didn't know. But she was gone.
It hadn't even been a year since he had met the girl who was now a contestant for the most important person in his life, paired with his dad and Judith.
But now Judith was gone, Rick was on the brink of death, and he didn't have Elle to comfort him and figure out how to fix everything.
He hadn't even gotten the chance to kiss her back before he lost her.
He looked down at his beat down dad and glared. Elle wasn't there to talk sense into him, so he just started yelling.
"I saved you!" he said, recalling moments before when he had led walkers away from the house they were cooped up in. "I didn't forget while you had us playing farmer. I still know how to survive."
His eyes glanced down to the bracelet on his wrist. "Lucky for us."
He continued to scream at the unconscious Rick. Everyone was gone and he needed someone to blame. Rick was there, so Carl put the blame on him.
He was still yelling," You couldn't protect Judith! You couldn't protect... Hershel, or Glenn, or Maggie, Michonne, Daryl. Or mom. They're all dead! Elle is dead! It has to be your fault! It has to be! Because if it's not your fault she's dead then it's mine! I let her go off! I let her leave! She's protected me since the moment I met her and I can't even save her one lousy time!"
He quickly wiped away the tears that had gathered in his eyes. He didn't get to cry, because it was his fault she was gone.
❖
It seemed that letting out all the thoughts stuffed in her mind had lit a fuse under Elle. Although it didn't last long before she was back to her current pessimistic self, it lasted long enough for her to get back on the trail of the tracks and lead her and Michonne to an old barbecue restaurant.
"I can't do this anymore," she said when they found nothing inside. "I can't, Michonne."
Michonne sighed, she couldn't blame the girl for her feelings. "I get it," she honestly said. "I want to fall apart too."
