Okay this book has not been completed (time to spam the author for more chapters lol) but I enjoyed it SO much so far. Madeline is no stranger to being alone. Really. She prefers it. After six years of solidarity, the Slytherin firmly believes that all she needs is herself. And good grades. But trouble comes when she makes a rival of James Potter, Marauder extraordinaire and lover of Lily Evans (only in his dreams). After a particularly irritating declaration of admiration for the redheaded Gryffindor, who is clearly NOT interested, Madeline's patience snaps. Suddenly, she becomes the target of the best prankster at Hogwarts. But James begins to wonder if there is more to the snarky "stuck-up" snake than meets the eye. For if there's anything that James is good at, it's making friends.
This story is light-hearted but also reflects on themes that any can relate to: loneliness, anger, rejection, and insecurity. I love Madeline's strength of character, but also that she is written to have flaws, as is James. The author certainly captures adolescent uncertainty and the difficult navigation of discovering who you are. James and Madeline have instant chemistry, being more alike than either would ever admit. This is one of the more realistic depictions of Hogwarts in the Marauder's Era and I also enjoyed how Lily is developed as a character with her own struggles. There is no perfect character and the interactions between Madeline and the Marauders will have you grinning ear to ear.. get reading ;)
