"They went to the east, the path goes all the way around the lookout to Seattle." Dina said, dragging her finger shakily across the map while Makayla was packing up the backpacks.
She was moving fast, throwing things around, trying to pack everything they needed.
"By horses we could get to Seattle in about three hours.." Dina continued and looked at Makayla,
"Makayla?" She asked and squinted her eyes in confusion.
Just then Dina noticed how Makayla shifted. As if she was in this war kinda state of mind.
So many thoughts were running around in her head.
Were they still alive? What will Sofia think when she wakes up and her parents won't be around?
She seemed almost disconnected.
"Makayla- you gotta stay focused."
Makayla's clouded up sight was suddenly interrupted by Dina's big brown eyes staring right into her's.
Her palms were on Makayla's cheeks as she tried to get her to focus on her.
"Sofia needs a mother.."
"You're talking as if he was already dead!" Makayla barked in her face, pulling away.
"Hey!" Dina started but she was having none of it-
"Dina don't fucking start!" Makayla's voice was harsh and strong. She was stressed and aggressive.
Dina stared at her blankly..
It was remainding her of the girl that once came back from Detroit, with cuts, bruises and blood all over her.
She stood looking at Makayla, before she spoke, "Let's move then."
...
1 hour and half laterThey were still moving forward on their horses even when the wind storm hit.
The wind was fast and heavy.
"It's only getting worse!" Dina called out from behind but Makayla didn't respond, shouting in this wind didn't do much anyway.
"The lookout.." Makayla mumbled to herself before guiding Shimmer to the side.
Maybe Joel and Tommy got there later and decided to wait the wind out, "Fuck!"
"Makayla!"
Dina shouted when she saw a tree fall right in front of her friend, creating a loud thump.
"You okay?!" She approached her and Makayla just nodded her head, trying to calm Shimmer down before they jumped down and took the horses into the garage.
They got down and Makayla cursed under her breath, "They weren't even fucking here."
Everything there was untouched, even the door double locked.
She looked at Dina and Dina frowned,
"You're not thinking about going back outside are you? We could get killed in between the trees."
Makayla closed her eyes for a long moment, sighing. Dina was right. It was stupid. If something happened to the horses they would not get to Seattle as fast.
So they stayed there, sitting in the complete silence. The only thing that could be heard was the strength of the wind pounding against the windows.
The tension radiating off of Makayla was unbearable. She was wiggling her foot nervously while staring at one spot the whole time.
