Chapter 5: "Blood Brother"

Liz and the boys traced Kevin to Enid, Oregon and they walk into the motel to find it empty. Dean says, "Well, that is twice that he's burned us. Shame on you." Sam says, "No, no, no, no. I'm the one who said he set us up." Dean says, "No, you said, "I wonder if Kevin is setting us up," and then you started in with the-- The techno babble. That was like two states ago." Sam says, "Yeah, well, whatever. Either way, that's another room billed to one of Kevin's false credit I.D.s. and the motel ran his number today." Liz says, "Just like he actually checked in?" Sam says, "Yes." Dean says, "Kid's like rain man. He's like a crappy little cred-card-counting... criminal prodigy rain man." Sam says, "Well, he was in advanced placement." Dean hands them both a beer he stole from the mini fridge and says, "Shut up. When's that little idiot gonna stop running from us?" Sam sighs and says, "I don't know." Henry still hasn't told them it was his idea for them to run. Henry gets comfortable on the bed and starts reading a book. Then Dean's phone rings and he picks it up and says, "Hello? Hello? Uh, hang on. There's not enough bars." Dean walks out the room and goes to stand near his car to talk privately because Benny's on the phone. Dean says, "Benny?" Benny says, "Hey, Dean. You, um-- you got a minute? Afraid I messed up, buddy." Dean leans against Baby and says, "What did you do?" Benny laughs and says, "No, man, not like that. I took on a whole vamp's nest." Dean says, "I'm sorry. You took on how many? Are you crazy?" Benny says, "Hey. See, the thing is, my legs-- They ain't working so good. There's, uh... a fuel barge not too far from here. I'm pretty sure I can make it at a slow crawl. I was kind of hoping maybe I could ask you for one more favor?" Dean then hangs up and walks in the room to tell Liz and Sam that he has to go. Sam says, "And-- And what exactly is that supposed to mean, you've got to go?" Dean says, "Which words are giving you trouble?" Sam says, "We're on the case, remember, Dean? The Winchester and Singer holy grail, "Shut the gates of hell forever" case." Dean says, "Sure are. But in order to close the gates of hell, we need our Prophet, am I right? So, step one-- Find Kevin Tran. Well, he ain't here. But he wanted us to be, which means we're probably as far away from him as he could possibly put us. So, step two-- Find Kevin Tran. You mind if I take the Toblerone?" Dean walks out the door with Sam following him and he says, "Wait. Dean, seriously?" Dean looks at Sam and says, "Hey, the trail is dead, but the room is paid for. You and Liz got some research to do, and I got some personal crap I got to take care of. That's all." Sam says, "What does that mean-- "Personal"?" Dean says, "Did you have a stroke? Vocabulary? Personal, as in my own grown-up personal-- I don't know-- Crap." Sam says, "Damn it--" Dean cuts Sam off and says, "What, Sam? Last I counted, you took a year off from the job. I need a day." Dean gets into his car and leaves. Sam sighs and goes back in the motel room and sees Liz on her computer trying to find Kevin. Sam says, "There is something up with him." Liz doesn't look up from her computer and says, "Yeah, I know. Sooner or later though, he's gonna tell us about it." Sam scoffs and says, "If he tells us." Liz looks up at Sam and softly says, "He will. I know it." Later, Henry's a asleep and Liz goes to open the door and Sam says, "Where you going?" Liz says, "For walk." Sam knows that he never apologized to Liz and softly says, "Can I come?" Liz softly says, "Sure." Sam grabs his jacket and their both out the door. They walk in a comfortable silence and Sam softly says, "Liz, I'm so sorry about leaving you. I was just so angry and I hope one day you can forgive me." Liz softly smiles at Sam and says, "It's okay. I already have. I'm also not mad that you took a year off from hunting and got to experience a normal life with a normal girl. I mean, it's been a long time since that has ever happened." Sam nods and says, "Yeah. It has been a while." The next day, Dean arrives where Benny is and brings a cooler of blood to him. Dean walks up to Benny, who looks almost dead on the ground and he says, "Benny? Not lookin good." Benny chuckles and weakly says, "Up yours." Dean gives Benny the blood and later Benny comes out a room looking refreshed. Dean looks at him and says, "Wow. You, uh... look okay." Benny says, "Getting there." Dean says, "Dude, you were double-hamstrung." Benny says, "Yeah, well, a little rest, half a cooler full of AB-Negative-- Most wounds short of an amputation will mend up. Vampirically speaking." Dean says, "Uh-huh." Benny says, "I'll be 100% before you know it." Benny has his hand and says, "Thank you, brother." Dean shakes his hand and says, "Benny, what's going on?" Benny says, "Oh, your work here is done, Dean. You already saved the day.  You know, I got my, uh, deal, and you got-- What'd you call it? A family business?" Dean says, "Benny. What's going on?" Benny says, "You and that whole "Friend" thing, man. Well, it's good to know you're still dumb as ever." Dean says, "Yeah, well, some things never change. Now, why are you getting into machete fights, with your own kind?" Benny says, "Quentin, the one I came for? We were in the same nest. I'm hunting the vampire who turned me, my maker." Dean says, "Well, now, don't get me wrong. I'm down with the hunting, but, uh... why?" Benny says, "Kill him before he kills me... again." Benny says, "Quentin and I went way back-- One of the old man's favorites, next to me, it turns out." Dean reads off some notes and from what Benny found on the vamps before he killed them and says, "Listen to this. "Age of Aquarius II, 0800," And then there's some other numbers all crossed out.  Some other weird names here, too-- The Big Mermaid, Solitaire-- It's all crossed out, except this one-- The Lucky Myra." Benny says, "Yachts. Names of Yachts-- Lucky Myra, Age of Aquarius II. Look at this one-- Sea you later, spelled S-E-A. I mean, come on." Dean points out and says, "So, then these are launch times. And what-- Destinations?" Benny says, "Mm-Hmm. Except none of them ever get there. The Lucky Myra left yesterday afternoon. I guarantee you it's already been hit." Dean says, "What do you mean, "Hit"?" Benny says, "Boarded, burned, and buried at sea. My nest-- that's we fed... how we always fed. We kept a tight little fleet, maybe a half-dozen boats. Nothing ostentatious just pleasure craft. I must have circled the Americas 10 times during my tour. A few of us would act as stringers and patrol the harbors, looking for the right-size target-- Fat, rich yachts going to far-off ports. Take down the boat's name and destination, radio it to the crew on the water. And then we just, uh... let the ocean swallow up all our sins." Dean says, "Vampire pirates? That's what you guys are? Vampirates." Benny laughs and says, "You know, all the years we ran together, I can't believe nobody ever thought of that." Dean says, "What do you mean? It's like the third thing you say." Benny says, "No, it isn't." Dean says, "All right, so, y-your maker is set up to feed around here, right? Well, what are we looking for?" Benny says, "Well, he liked to live in style. He usually rents legitimately. Always remote, always coastal." Dean says, "So an island, maybe? You got a cable bill here. Hmm. Quentin's got the NFL package. Prentiss Island. Heard of it?" Benny says, "Oh, yeah." They're then on the road and Dean says, "Yeah, so if you were your maker's favorite, why did he kill you?" Benny says, "When you get turned, it's like you're reborn into a vampire nest. Your maker-- He means everything to you. I mean, you really start believing he's God. Now, if your maker happens to believe the same thing, well... " Dean sees Benny drink blood in his car and says, "See how that could be a pickle." Benny hums and Dean says, "We, uh-- You really have to do that? I mean, right now?" Dean slightly disgusted and Benny laughs and says, "I'm sorry, brother. I'm better, but I'm still on the mend." Dean says, "Right." Benny says, "Anyway... our father-- He was a jealous God. He kept the family together but kept us apart from the rest of the world, always at sea. I always did what was best for the nest... till I met her. Andrea. Andrea Kormos. Beautiful. I mean, words don't even cut it, you know? Greek, heiress." Dean says, "Come on." Benny says, "She was sailing a 42-foot sloop to the Canary Islands. Now, I should have called her boat's destination into my crew, but instead, I joined her on it." Dean laughs and says, "Seriously? Was Fabio on the cover of that paperback?" Benny says, "My life changed when she entered it, Dean. Everything I had been or done up to that point just... seemed to vanish... into what we had become together. I mean... we found it, man. Eventually, we settled in Louisiana. And then one night, we were coming home, and the old man-- He was just there. Quentin, Sorento, my oldest nestmates. It was only that night I understood what a crime it was to him-- Me leaving him. They pinned me down, and they beheaded me. The last thing I saw was the old man tearing out Andrea's throat." Dean says, "Well, that's what payback's all about-- Am I right?" Benny nods and then says, "Docks are up ahead. Should be able to find a dinghy to use." They then get on a small boat and ride it where Benny's old nest is. They get off the boat and start walking. Benny says, "We're close. Remind you of anything? It's weird being back-- In the world, I mean. Isn't it?" Dean says, "Sure as hell is." Benny says, "I mean, what do you do with it all? All the-- All the everything? Hell, I don't even know if this world is real, If I'm real." Dean says, "Hey, listen to me. I see what happens down that rabbit hole, okay? We're real. Benny, this is real. It's the only way to play this game, you get me?" They then sneak into the house and Dean sees Benny not moving. Dean whispers, "Time to move, Benny." Benny looks down and says, "The old man's harpsichord." Dean whisper-shouts, "Benny!" Dean then walks away and then Dean finds Benny getting a beating from other vamps and says, "Idiot." Dean then walks the halls and then his phone vibrates and it's Sam, so he ignores it and says, "Little busy right now." Dean sees shadow and hides in a room. Then Dean calls Sam back and Sam has Dean on speaker, and he says, "Hey." Dean whispers, "Okay, what?" Sam says, "What?" Dean says, "Why did you call me?" Liz says, "Why are you whispering?" Dean says, "It's kind of hard to explain, but I'm sort of in the middle of cleaning out a vampire's nest, and it's sort of gone a little sideways on me." Sam angrily says, "What?! Are you an idiot, Dean? You know better than to go into a vamp nest alone." Dean whispers, "I'm not alone, damn it. All right? I'm not alone. I've got backup-- Guy who's been tracking the nest for a while." Liz says, "What guy?" Dean says, "You guys don't know him. He's a friend." Sam says, "A friend? Dean, you don't have any-- all your friends are dead." Dean whisper-shouts, "That's not what I called to talk about." Sam says, "I get the separate-lives thing, but this is a hunting thing, and we need to find that line--" Dean cuts Sam off and says, "Oh, my God, stop talking. I texted you my 20." Sam says, "Yeah, I got it. Look, we're on our way. And listen, if you handle it, great. I'll buy your friend the first round. But, Dean, listen to me. Dean? Dean, are you there? Dean. Dean. You kidding me?" Then the line goes dead and Dean slices a vamp and then picks up his phone, but is cracked. Dean says, "Oh, man, come on." Sam throws his phone on the ground and angrily says, "Damn it!" Back with Dean, as he goes to drag the body away, he sees another vampire and he kills him another with two more. Dean then goes to find Andrea about to kill Benny, but then he stabs her and then slices her head off. They then get back into the boat and Benny says, "What'd you do it, Dean?" Dean says, "Do what?" Benny says, "Resurrect me. You could have drained my soul into any culvert, and no one would have been the wiser." Dean says, "What the hell are you talking about? Hey, you good?" Benny says, "Man... I don't know what I am." They then arrive to the dock where Liz and Sam are and Dean tosses the rope and Liz wraps is around the dock to secure the boat. Dean and Benny step onto the dock and Liz and Sam look over at Benny. Benny holds his hand out to shake and he says, "I'm Benny. Heard a lot about you two, Liz and Sam." Sam shakes Benny's hand and Sam reaches to his side about to take out his knife and Dean shakes his head at him. Sam let's go of Benny's hand and as Benny reaches for Liz's hand, Sam puts a protected arm out in front of her and Benny notices and says, "I can see you three have a lot to talk about." Benny pats Dean's arm and walks away. Liz and Sam both look angry at Dean and he knows he has some explaining to do.
