A few days had passed since Sonics run with Shadow. He went home after a full afternoon of it, exploring new places no one else could reach with another person was fulfilling for him.
He and Shadow didn't stop at the beach, they ran through forests, climbed up mountains, raced on waters, all while barely speaking. It was as though they were afraid to ruin it with any wrong words and Sonic was more than okay with it.
He had convinced himself running alone was ideal, a great way to get some quiet time, but after that afternoon, he couldn't imagine himself ever going alone again. He wanted someone ther- he wanted Shadow there.
When they said their goodbyes after nine hours of nonstop action, Shadow hesitated turning away. Of course he still did, but Sonic knew he'd be back the next day.
But he never showed. He didn't show for five days and on the sixth day the only hint Sonic got of him was a rather sticky pillow he dug out from his underneath his couch.
He had completely forgotten to ask for a way to reach Shadow, though he was sure he wouldn't have gotten one anyway. Sonic was also relieved when the bite mark brought no attention, not even Amy, another of his kind, had noticed it.
He was sat around a flimsy wooden table surrounded by all his close friends, they were sharing tales of victory and laughing at jokes Knuckles tried to make.
"And there he was, wailing his arm at me as he sped away on that stupid egg." Tailed chortled as Amy pointed excitedly at him, "yes! I remember that! Wasn't that the same day that Stix found a rusty bucket on the beach and tried to convince us it was an ancient robot trying to rebuild itself?" Giggles were shared, except for Stix who crossed her arms, "one day I'll be right and you'll all by sorry."
"The only thing I'm sorry for is that poor robot." Knuckles said completely seriously. Everyone paused and then burst once again in a fit of laughter.
Sonic knocked his fist into the table, settling down.
"This talk of robots remind me, Sonic," Amy turned towards him, "why were you even at his lair a couple weeks ago? He's been out of town for ages."
Sonic pondered, "just making sure everything was normal, I guess."
Amy nodded, and Stix piped up, "we only went in after you because we could've sworn we saw Shadow there to."
Sonic heard the name and was immediately pining for more information, "why would he go there? He doesn't care what Eggman does."
"Thats the thing- we don't know. It doesn't matter anyway because when we found you you were by yourself anyway." Amy said.
"Yeah.." Sonic trailed, "how did you get me out that trap anyway?"
Knuckles shook his head, "losing your memory must be tough," he leaned forward and placed a comforting hand on Sonics shoulder, "you weren't in a trap, ok buddy?"
The blue head nodded, tapping Knuckles hand away.
If it wasn't the team, who let them out?
Another hour of reminiscing went by when they all waved each other off. Sonic happy that his friends were always there.
When he got home he was happily startled by Shadow, who had helped himself to a biscuit that Amy baked for Sonic.
"She's a good cook." He garbled.
"Yeah she is." Sonic agreed, also going in for a biscuit.
"You're probably wondering why I waited nearly 7 days."
"Not really," Sonic lied, "I know you're busy."
"That I am. Always doing GUN'S dirty work for them, I'm tired of it." He shook his head.
"At least you get a nice bathroom out of it." Sonic snorted, scarfing down his biscuit in two swift bites as Shadow watched in horror, who was only partially through his.
"I got some interesting news today, wanted to hear your opinion." Sonic strolled to his couch and sat down. Shadow remained where he was in the kitchen, "do tell." He said as he took a normal nibble from his biscuit.
"Team Sonic weren't the one who released us from that box."
Shadow coughed, his ears perked, "what? They weren't?"
Sonic shook his head, his quills dancing along.
"Then who did?"
"I was hoping you'd have that answer."
Shadow put down his biscuit.
"I don't. But I do have more questions," he crossed his arms, "I was brought there on request from GUN, who asked me to investigate Eggmans absence."
"Yeah, he's been gone a few months now, we're liking the peace in the village."
"I found nothing of note except that stupid box. I don't think it was meant for you."
"Why would Eggman want to catch you? He's terrified of you, it was definitely meant for me, or Amy or...someone."
Shadow swore under his breath as he relived that humiliating moment.
"I couldn't use chaos control."
Sonic stood up at the new addition to the story, "you.. couldn't do anything?"
"Nothing except get hard." Shadow walked towards one of the many open windows and leaned out, looking at the very distant building of Eggmans lair in the horizon.
"We should go back." Sonic said with determination, getting next to Shadow, who looked at him fondly.
He thought about it for a moment and decided against the idea. Whatever secrets were waiting there, he didn't want to know. All he wanted in that moment was to keep listening to Sonics voice, who continued rambling about possible reasons for the box.
"No, I don't want to." Sonic tilted his head, "why?"
Shadow looked into his eyes, grazing his fingertips across Sonics cute little ear, which twitched.
"Sometimes things don't need to have a reason."
"But-"
"They can turn something good into something sour, having to explain it is tiresome, why can't we live without the desire for a conclusion?"
"It'll eat away at me."
"Let me do that instead."
