An afternoon glow danced across Shadows fur as he raced around the small island town, determined to find a store that might have what he needed. It wasn't a very large area, you could see everything the market had to offer just standing at a short distance and it didn't take Shadow long to realize this town of maybe 150 inhabitants didn't have high-end medications.
He glared at the beaver who ran the plant stand as he slammed a useless concoction of herbs back onto the stall, the beaver flinched, scared of the stranger he only knew through rumours.
"What is this crap? How does anyone survive in this awful place!"
The beaver choked, "i-it's just a home remedy.. I told you it's not for-"
Shadow rolled his eyes and stormed off before the seller could finish talking.
Shadow stomped away from the market as eyes followed him, a dozen shopkeepers collectively sighed in relief as he trailed out of site.
"This place is the worst." He muttered, knowing he would have to go to the mainland for what he needed.
He didn't want to go without seeing Sonic first so he- having failed his task- grumpily made his way back to the coast where the crumbling little hut was.
Although the warnings flashed in his mind and the prospect of another break was very likely he pushed down the intrusive thoughts and marched on his merry way, seeing Sonic made him happy, and he'd been damned if he allowed others to stop him. He and his other half were together so consistently menial tasks and daily life were long but forgotten, he didn't eat, bathe, sleep, do chores or focus on anything unless it was with Sonic, which he was perfectly content with.
But there was one thing he had to do on his own; work. Shadow had not responded to a single work assignment in weeks, his communicator went off so often he broke it and through it miles away, he thought it was disruptive, though Sonic would suggest he ought to go in sometime. Shadow would respond slightly with, "I don't need GUN, GUN needs me." Which made the blue hedgehog roll his eyes back into his head when Shadow would turn his gaze.
As he approached the raggedy hut, the appearance of white fur in purple clothes made his remember someone else he worked with did, in fact, need him.
"Rouge, what are you doing here?" He said, trying to move past the bat.
She grabbed his arm and scoffed, "is that any way to treat a lady?"
He shrugged, his focus was on getting back to Sonic.
Rouge scrunched her face and pushed his arm so that he faced her, "look lover boy, I'm happy for you and I'm glad you found someone yadayada," her sarcasm was clear, "but it's time to get back to normal life and honestly, after all the shit I've heard, that's probably the best thing for you."
Shadow groaned in annoyance, of course Tails was bound to tell Amy who was bound to tell Stix who was bound to tell Knuckles who was bound to tell Rouge who was bound to come and interlude. He knew there was no point arguing, although he acted tough, when Rouge said she knew best there was no arguing.
"Can I at least say bye?"
She narrowed her eyes and nodded suspiciously.
Shadow ran past her at her approval and entered Sonics hut to find him still fast asleep. He crept over and kneeled beside him, giving him a small kiss on his forehead, "I'll see you soon." He whispered, turning to make his leave.
Rouge smiled at him and beckoned him next to her, she pulled a small screen from her pocket and started to walk towards the sandy beach with Shadow, who would blip them away upon receiving an assignment.
"You wouldn't know this because you hate us now, but Omega is down for a week for repairs-"
"What happened?!" Shadow panicked, amazed at how casually Rouge mentioned this.
She chuckled, "he's fine, new recruit just took out an arm in training, that kid has some dangerous skills."
"New recruit?"
"Yeah, you would know he was assigned to Omega if you paid any attention," she hungrily waited for Shadows face to fall, "but since Omega is out he falls to us. Or rather you- since I can't stand kids- so here-" she handed him the device, "he's waiting for you there."
Shadow looked at the map on the device, "he's in the middle of a fucking desert?"
Rouge shrugged, "he basically destroyed the training grounds at headquarters so this is where they shoved him."
Shadow thought back to the GUN recruitment centre and wondered how newbie destroyed a football field size area surrounded completely by steel and rock.
"Where's his file?" He asked as he prepared to blip.
"I think it'all be more fun if you meet in person." Rouge smiled, stepping back to wave Shadow off as he flashed himself away, looking questioningly at his friend.
Sure enough when he reappeared he was in blazing heat and the driest air he had ever breathed, it didn't feel good on his fur.
"Oh wow!" A small but excited voice erupted behind him, he turned around, and was surprised at what he saw. A hedgehog, slightly bigger than Sonic with grey fur and a large fluff around his neck, he had long quills and wore glowing boots and gloves, his tail was shaking uncontrollably and he had a smile so wide his teeth shined through, "I didn't know I'd be getting THE Shadow the Hedgehog!"
All Shadow could think of how this kid managed to impair Omega, he looked like a puppy.
