Rouge and Omega stayed with Shadow until the sun rose, sadly excusing themselves they explained they had been assigned another mission. They offered Shadow to join them but he refused, his apartment was a complete disaster and he had to get it back in order. They wished him luck and departed through the busted down doorway.
Right after they dissapeared from sight, Shadow slumped back down onto his couch, staring blankly at a cracked television screen, his shattered reflection glared back.
Very few times had he allowed himself to feel this hopeless, he would always avoid any chance of heartbreak altogether. If it weren't for her persistence, he and Rouge would never have gotten as close as they were. He was thankful she had come when she did, he didn't tell her that he was a tick away from exploding the GUN base.
He slumped his head back, imagining the evening in a better light, where Sonic never left and they napped peacefully beside eachother. But then he remembered the pill and the deception, feeling angry all over again.
Why? Why couldn't Sonic have simply trusted him and forgotten Robotnik? He had to be a hero, yet it's like Rouge told him, you can't blame a hero for protecting you.
He was stupid for reversing that chemical, he lost the most important thing in his world and it was his own impulsive behavior that ruined everything.
It was a gut wrenching feeling knowing Sonic never really loved him, knowing it was all a mistake. His stomach twisted in knots as he recalled Sonics emotionless face glancing towards him, like nothing ever happened.
Shadow started laughing at the ceiling, chuckling uncomfortably as he squeezed his eyes together. A few droplets rolled from them as he continued to cackle, punching the ripped cushion beside him.
"Ah, you fucker," he snorted, "you stupid, hopeless idiot." He clenched his fists around his eyes and let himself cry.
The only thing he wanted in that moment was Sonics warm fur rubbing against his. They only had a short while together but Shadow had been secretly pining for years, sharing odd moments and quick conversations.
He remembered one they had after the Ark incident, when he had revealed himself to be alive and slowly regained his memories.

A great orange sunset fell behind two hedgehogs as they stared down at a collapsed robot, it smoked from every crevice and crackled from many broken wires. Shadow, staring at it with steely focus waiting for it to make any small movements did not let his fists rest.
"It's okay, dude. You can relax." Sonic, who was leaning back on a tree with his arms behind his head was watching the other humorously.
"Fool, that Doctor tricked me once, he won't get a second chance."
Sonic chuckled, "he actually tricked you twice, but I guess you wouldn't remember that, besides, I've been fighting this guy for years. I can tell when he's done." Shadow looked at him curiously.
"How?" He dropped his stance and turned towards the smaller hedgehog, pacing slowly forward.
Sonic shrugged, closing his eyes, "I don't know. You can just tell, you know?"
"I don't." Shadow said firmly, "can you explain?"
"Sure. It's like with Amy-"
"The pink one?"
"Yeah- I know she's strong, and she'll always be there if I need her, but I also know when she's hurting and needs space. It's intuition, you can guess things about people."
Shadow stepped forward and sat next to Sonic, looking towards the robot.
"So you can predict the future?"
Sonic giggled, Shadows heart lept, "no, not even close. You'll get it one day."
He stole a look at the lounging Sonic, "what can you tell about me?" He asked shyly.
Sonic opened one eye and looked at Shadow, "you have a good heart, that's pretty clear seeing how you've saved the day multiple times, but you're absent."
"Absent?" Shadow raised his brows.
Sonic leaned forward and put a hand on his back, "you're welcome to join us, if you want. You don't have to be alone."
Shadow grumbled, "I'm not alone!" He swatted Sonics hand, "who would want to join your cheersquad anyway?"
Sonic resumed his lounging, "your decision. Maybe you'll reconsider once you get your memories back."
They sat there for a little while, sharing the sunsets warmth when a small plane came zooming into the scene. Sonic said goodbye to Shadow, smiling at him as he jumped on the wing and flew away.
I have a good heart.
