Two hearts were breaking before eachother as Eggman watched on curiously, wondering how his grandfather's chemical compound could have possibly worked on the blue hedgehog, a natural life form with a completely different genetic makeup than the carefully manufactured super being. He had read the files and studied the chemical composition for weeks, ensuring it was perfectly curated before he called upon Shadow.
His calculations were not wrong, he knew it had been successful, what he did not know was what effect it had on his arch nemesis, if any at all. The rodent was certainly behaving differently the last month, as he knew by his spy-bots. He of course did not see everything, as that was too strange even for a scientist.
"I- I had to! You were in danger!" Sonics voice was cracking.
"I was never in danger," Shadow stepped passed Sonic, refusing to make eye contact, "and even if I had been, I can handle myself."
"I want to protect you!"
Shadow yelled, "I don't need protecting! Especially not from some meddlesome hedgehog!"
Sonic whimpered, "you don't mean that." He was doing his best to hold back tears.
Shadow ignored him and approached Eggman, "I want it reversed." He demanded.
"Reversed? Nonsense. You are finally complete, my grandfather's work on you is done."
"Reverse it!" Shadow's teeth were held tightly together, "I know you can!"
Eggman laughed, "yes, I can. But it won't change how you feel."
Shadow paused, turning his head at the sound of Sonics soft crying. He held back the urge to look at him.
"I don't want it reversed for me." He shook away any sign of weakness. If Eggman was right and Sonics feeling weren't genuine.. he did not want them.
"Wh- no!" Sonic ran behind Shadow, wrapping his arms around the shaking waist, "I don't want that!"
Shadow pried him off and pushed him back, Sonic stumbled, falling to his knees.
"Shadow! What are you doing?"
"You lied to me!" Red eyes met emerald ones, staring down at the tearful hedgehog with anger and distrust, that's all Shadow allowed himself to show.
"I had to make sure you were safe? Don't you get that?" Sonic pleaded.
Shadow grunted, "you're lying again. You didn't care about me, you wanted answers."
"That's not true!"
"It is! But you should be happy, you finally have the answers you were willing to break me to get!"
There was a pause as Shadows voice quivered. He turned away from Sonic and looked up to the screen, staring at the picture of the pink vial.
"Your love for me is artificial." He said passively.
Sonic shook his head, standing back up, "you're wrong!"
There was a pulling feeling as a yellow light gathered around Shadow, surrounding him with energy.
Eggman backed up as he knew what was coming, grinning ear to ear with anticipation.
"Chaos Spear!" Shadow screamed as a dozen yellow spears penetrated the screen, cracking it and causing every light in the room to flicker.
The bright light vanished.
"You know you don't have to destroy the place." Eggman quipped.
Shadow ignored him, noticing a large green button on an intact portion of the console.
"It's all fake. Everything. No matter what I do, the experiments don't stop."
"Shadow.." Sonic paced towards him.
Without another breath, Sonic was instantly thrown back to the centre of the room, and before he could collect himself a small glass box had trapped him to the floor.
He saw Shadow staring at the console, his finger shaking above the green button.
"What are you doing!?" Sonic screamed, banging against the glass repeatedly.
"Shadow what are you doing?!" He was in tears.
"I'm going to fix it."
"No! I don't want that!" Sonic was begging as he hit the glass hard enough to crack it. If there was any possibility his love for Shadow wasn't real, he didn't care.
"Please! Stop! I love you!"
Shadows heart skipped, but he did not look at Sonic.
"Then prove it."
The button made no sound. Nothing seemed to have happened.
Eggman watched Sonic struggling in the cage, coughing and sniffling heavily. He knew the gas form of the serum was invisible.
Shadow held his arms tightly, clenching his eyes. Soon, Sonics crying stopped. He wiped his tears and sat back on his legs. The cage lifted itself, reverting back into the ceiling.
Shadow turned to look at his lover, who looked back.
There was nothing in those brilliant green eyes.
Shadow gritted his teeth and vanished.
Eggman approached the hedgehog, who was acting completely lifeless.
"It didn't work did it?" He asked. He had seen enough of Sonic to know when he was faking.
"No, it never did." Sonic muttered.
"Then why the act? Why let him go?" Interesting and odd behavior for the spunky rodent.
Sonic shrugged, staring blankly ahead, more tears started falling from his eyes.
"I hurt him," he said, trying to wipe the onslaught away, "I lied to him! He hates me!"
"Probably." Eggman said, uncaring as he looked at his destroyed tech, "I'd hate you to, I mean, I DO hate you, you're always destroying things, always snooping around where you don't belong, it's annoying."
Sonic blinked, "great pep talk, Eggy."
"I do my best."
Sonic sniffed, he didn't want to get up.
"Why did you even do all this?"
Eggman chuckled, "it's as I said. Science has the right to progress, now Shadow is a complete specimen."
"He was never in danger?"
"Not even once."
"I fucked up so bad."
Eggman shrugged, "it can't all be on you."
Sonic raised his eyebrows, "what do you mean?"
The Doctor began tinkering at his computer, "you can't love someone and expect them to change. Shadow knows you're disgustingly curious, he can only blame himself. To tell you my theory, I think a part of him knew what this was, and he was too scared that you'd find out and reject him."
"But.. he rejected me.." Sonic sighed.
"Such is life. Now, could you send Orbot and Cubot back when you leave? I'll need their help to fix this mess you two made."
Sonic sat there for a second before slowly leaving through the giant doors. He turned to Eggman one last time, "are you sure it didn't affect me?"
"No, not at all. It's a very fragile compound, you see, if you're so worried get the fox to run some tests, now GO!" Eggman waved him away, Sonic obliged. Eggman seemed hardly interested in him after his two month absence.
The walk home was horrible. He balled his eyes out the entire time, hoping Shadow would appear in front of him with his arms out. But he couldn't shake those red eyes glaring at him like that, like he was a stain on a white shirt.
"I'm so stupid!" He cried, collapsing into a palm tree. He curled himself into a little blue ball, softly sobbing.

Shadow had arrived back at his apartment and destroyed the place. He broke every surface and tore up every piece of fabric, books scraps and shards of glass littered the floor.
How could he be so obtuse? He knew it was too perfect to be true. Nothing good in his life ever stayed that way. It was always doomed, as if suffering was his shadow.
"I hate you!" He shouted at himself, glaring down on his inhibitor rings. "Whats the point anyway?" He wrapped his hand around one, starting to twist it off.
He was stopped by the sight of spilled popcorn on his floor.
I can't hurt the base because I'm upset.
Letting go of the ring, he plopped down on his torn to shreds couch, feeling a horrible swelling at his eyes. Tears streamed down his face and he clutched it, cursing at this pathetic display of emotion.
"You wanted me to be perfect Doctor, but I'm so far from it, I'm sorry." He hugged himself and allowed the crying to carry on, not that he could stop it now anyway.

"Sonic!"
"Sonic where are you!"
"Sonic please come out!"
"Guys I found him!" Knuckles waved everyone towards him, who all ran with top speed to the echidna. Tails had returned home in the Tornado and immediately gathered everyone, telling them of the base and Eggmans trap, hinting Sonic might be in trouble. Cubot and Orbot had told them he wasn't, but upon returning to Eggmans lair and seeing no Sonic, they went on the search.
They saw Sonic crying softly, still in his ball.
Amy got to him first, bending on her knees and picking up his head, resting it on her lap.
Sonic sniffed, Knuckles sat on his other side and put a hand on his back.
Tails sat in front of him and held his hand.
Stix stood there looking at him sadly, she wasn't as close to him as the others, but she wanted to support him all the same.
"What happened?" Amy asked, stroking his quills.
Sonic shook his head.
"He got his heart broken." Tails deduced.
Amy looked down at him, she had never seen him so upset.
"It was my fault," Sonic whispered, "I lied to him."
"You were protecting him!" Tails defended.
"That was just to make me feel better. How do you protect the ultimate life form?"
No one had an answer.
Knuckles pat Sonics back, "if he can't appreciate you, you're better without him."
"Yeah, who needs boyfriends?" Amy added.
"Certainly not you." Stix retorted.
Everyone giggled.
"I really messed up. I think it's over." Sonic groaned.
"Trust me, it's not that easy to get over Sonic The Hedgehog, he'll be back." Amy said lovingly. Sonic smiled, pushing himself off the ground.
He wrapped his arms around Amy and Knuckles, gesturing for Tails and Stix to join.
They all shared a group hug, Sonics spirit rose exponentially.
"Thanks you guys."
"We love you, buddy." Tails said.
"You're going to be okay." Knuckles squeezed them all tightly.
Sonic believed them.

A loud crash rang through the hallway outside Shadows apartment, he had fallen asleep but was startled awake, the pain in his chest returning.
He jumped up and prepared a battle stance, but was flabbergasted as Rouge and Omega came banging through his door, busting it off its hinges as they did.
"What are you-"
"Relax, it matches the rest of the place." Rouge said, looking around.
"RUNNING SCAN. SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG, VITALS AT 100%. EMOTIONAL STATE IN SHAMBLES."
"Would you stop?" Rouge smacked Omega lightly and approached Shadow.
He tried to step back but she pulled him into the most suffocating hug he ever endured.
"WOULD JOIN TEAM BUILDING. CANNOT. WOULD CRUSH PARTNERS." Omega chimed.
"I heard it all honey, came as soon as I could."
"You're the one who gave him that pill."
She released the hug, "not my brightest idea I'll admit. Forgot that stuff doesn't work on you."
"You wanted him to deceive me."
Rouge looked insulted, "are you confident Eggman wasn't planning a world takeover?"
"No but-"
"Then you get no say, really. Quit being selfish. Sonic took action where you were too afraid to, and for what?"
"I- I found out.. it's-"
"And how can you blame him like this? You can't expect a hero not to save the day."
Shadow huffed, "so I should blame you for pushing him?"
"Oh honey," she rammed a finger into his poof, "don't start with me! I broke a fucking robot into this place for you!"
"CONVERSATION SCAN, ROUGE WINNING."
She laughed as Shadows cheeks went red.
"Th-thank you." Shadow muttered.
"You're welcome. Now tell me everything."
They sat on the remnants of the couch and Shadow spilled his heart out.
He was happy to have them there, they were a great distraction.

Eggman had left the main room to be fixed by his robots, taking to one of his many backup computers. Unbeknownst to Shadow and Sonic, their bodies had been scanned and DNA retrieved to confirm experimental success. As Eggman was reading through the results, his jaw dropped to the floor upon seeing Sonics.
The reverse serum did not do anything, like he had figured.
But the original chemical did, and he was astounded by the outcome.
