Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles and Stix all walked home together that night, taking their sweet time to do so under the light of the moon. Sonic relayed the events prior to them, sniffling throughout the recap. Amy held Sonics hand in support the entire time, as he was always a second away from breaking down and she could feel he needed it. They traveled through sand and grass, following old trails, taking in the beauty of their little island, a feat none of them had done in ages. They had gotten so used to it that they forgot how special it really was.
Tails and Sonic were arm in arm, sharing a connection deeper than anyone else in the group, a bond only brothers had. All their adventures together and this is the one that destroyed Sonic, over love. Tails was certain his brother wasn't interested in love, though he once had a small crush on Amy, it didn't last long, forgotten by their many journeys and hardships. It was strange to see him stumbling on his own feet, turning his head hopefully to every crack of a stick or brush of a tree. It was sad, and it hurt Tails. Sonic fought for him countless times, saved him just as much if not more, and yet he felt guilty knowing there wasn't anything he could do to make him better. He squeezed their arms, smiling up at Sonic who faintly grinned back.
Knuckles was probably the only one who understood what this pain felt like, he had lost love a long time ago, it shattered him in those days. He now had Rouge, who was the best thing he ever happened across, and that pain faded to nothingness compared to the love he had now. He knew Sonic would be okay, but that no one but himself could make it better.
Sonic stumbled under himself, Amy and Tails grabbing him. He looked to the ground, embarrassed, "sorry guys. I know I'm pretty pathetic right now." He sighed.
"You have nothing to apologize for, how many times have you picked us up?" Amy said.
"A billion, if not more!" Tails cheered.
Knuckles grunted in agreement and Stix nodded, "you've always been there, and I ain't known you very long but I know when the aliens come for us, you'll be the one to pound 'em out."
Sonic looked at the badger, "I will be." He thanked her with his eyes. They weren't the closest, but if Stix wasn't here with them he knew it would feel like there was a void.
They walked on for a while more, pointing out pretty things in their surroundings, talking about how perfect their home was. When they arrived in the village, Amy, Knuckles and Stix hugged him tightly before saying goodbye for the night. He was going to stay with Tails for a while, they had discussed it on their walk and agreed it was best for Sonic not to be alone in a house with so many memories, at least Shadow had never been to Tails' house.
"What is it about Shadow you like so much anyway?" Tails asked once they were alone.
Sonic thought about the question, "he's not like me. I'm the same around everyone, but not him. When he's alone with me, he changes. It's strange, he's funny, playful, loving. He holds me like I'm a piece of glass and speaks so kindly to me."
Tails pat his back, "I get it. It sounds like he was crazy for you."
Sonic furrowed his brows, "aren't you supposed to be talking mad crap about him?"
Tails shrugged, "I don't really see a point. You won't listen to any of it, besides, I doubt it's over."
"Amy said that to, why?" Sonic hugged himself, a little bit of hope renewed.
"Well, we saw you guys. Shadow's just mad. I don't really understand why you faked it though." Tails perked his ears as Sonic answered, "looking back now I don't know either. I think I wanted to see what he would do," he clenched his eyes, "I know that's stupid. Now he thinks the worst. I did that to him."
"You were testing him?"
"No! I- I mean.. yeah, I was."
Tails didn't need to scold him.
"I was so hurt, he pushed me twice and threw me under that fucking box. He didn't look at me once and refused to hear me out!" Sonic felt a pulsing in his chest, "I wanted him to feel the same way! Jerk!"
Tails pulled out a set of keys from the fanny pack he carried around, "I'm sure he did."
He unlocked his front door and the two of them strolled into the workshop that doubled as a home for Tails. It was late at night, drowsiness tugged at their eyes. They climbed up the ladder to the loft, Tails pulled out a sleeping bag from a little cupboard and rolled it onto the floor. He handed Sonic a pillow and wished him goodnight, crawling into his bed.
Sonic pulled the bag over his shoulders and closed his eyes. The silence of the room was distracting, the negative thoughts overwhelmed him and he started crying, trying to be as quiet as he could.
The fox of course heard it, and without speaking lay down beside Sonic, pressing his back into the bag against Sonics.
The brothers then fell asleep, closer than they ever were.
