Soulmates had always been a depressing topic for Danny. He'd always heard about them from his parents growing up, they'd met when they were kids and grew up together. He had heard the story a million times and dreamed of finding his own, wondering, waiting, hoping that the next person that he saw would be that magical person who'd change his life forever.
When he started middle school, his hope began to fade, and by high school it had vanished completely. Everyone around him was buzzing with excitement though. Today was the official lesson, the day they learned how they could meet them, what it could feel like, how they would know. People in relationships would be tested, and they were nervous, glancing at each other, though still holding hands.
He sighed as he set his books down on his desk and slid into his seat. As the other students filed into the classroom, chattering excitedly about something or other, Danny merely turned to look out the window, preparing to ignore today's lesson.
As the teacher walked in, everyone became eerily quiet, the excitement still buzzing beneath the surface. To be entirely honest, Danny's tactic was working, he didn't hear half of what the teacher had said. It wasn't until the door opened again that he turned his head.
A quiet girl meekly walked towards the teacher, holding a late pass in her hand. Danny had never seen her before, which was strange since he knew everyone here, but he was curious. Blue hair, average height, uniform perfectly pressed, pretty typical minus the dyed hair. She apologized for being late and disturbing class and began walking towards the only empty desk, right behind him.
As she walked past some of the girls sitting in front of him, one of them stuck their foot out, tripping her. They giggled as she stumbled. Danny quickly reached out, one hand grabbing her arm, the other holding himself up so she wasn't taking them both to the ground.
Danny suddenly wished he had been paying more attention to the lesson. Even in the 30 seconds that everything had happened, he could feel that something had changed, that this girl was special to him. As she slowly stood up, regaining her balance, she looked over at him and his breath caught in his throat.
Purple eyes. He'd never heard of anyone having purple eyes before but they were a light shade of lavender, spots of sky blue mixed in. They were...odd, yet beautiful.
"Thank you." She said simply, before turning to sit at her desk before he could reply. Danny slowly turned to face the front of the room, no longer tuning out the teacher on purpose, but more so because his mind couldn't comprehend what had just happened.
Was this what they meant? Did she feel it too? It didn't seem like it. He began to think, trying to remember his parents' story.
He had noticed before I did...we finally got together in middle school...we fought a lot in the beginning...I didn't think he was telling the truth...I finally realized in high school...we finally got to know each other, our deepest thoughts, secrets, emotions. Our truest selves...
He barely noticed the bell ring as he grabbed his books and walked out into the halls. He saw Arny standing in front of some cheerleader, grabbing the back of his hoodie and dragging him away towards the direction of Danny's locker.
"Hey! What the hell man?" Danny stopped and turned towards him.
"I need your notes from the English lesson this morning." He was still uncomfortable with the word. It felt weird.
"The soulmate thing? Why? You hate that shit." Arny said, staring at him strangely. Just then, the girl walked past, glancing up at him again. He gave her a small wave as she gave him a smile, blushing before quickening her pace. He looked back towards Arny who was now giving him a stupid grin. He shoved his folder towards Danny.
