Chapter 25

Martha and Bonnie can easily handle the babies for now while we are gone. Kirk is out front with the car ready, waiting for us. Nanny gets in the front with Kirk to ride shotgun and we pile in the backseat. My husband is really pale and nervous, shaking and clenching my hands. I can feel him, his fears and emotions. "Baby, the twins will have to go straight to the NICU, right?"

Nanny hears his soft, trembling voice of deep concern and worry, she turns around to look directly at him, "Sir, it's highly likely but please know it will be alright. The staff will take wonderful care of your babies there and you will be with them every step of the way. Please, try not to worry. Also, I will be there taking care of them."

He's going to weird out on me. I just know he is going to. We were present a couple of weeks ago for an ultrasound and everything seemed fine. The twins were bigger than average at that point. For some reason, our biological babies are very advanced in development. "Babe, my heart is breaking apart right now and I don't know how to stop these horrible feelings. [Whispering at a hush squeaking out] Please help me."

Tears are now streaming down his beautiful face. I take a hankie from my purse to blot them. "Darling, please try to be strong. Our babies are healthy and past the crucial 32 weeks, almost 33 weeks. It's not the end of the world if they spend a little time in special care. We will bond with them just the same. Look, Sweetheart, we are arriving at the hospital. Let's go in, meet with the Doctor and see what's happening, okay?" He seems a little calmer and more controlled as we exit the car and enter the VIP entrance. A hospital representative is eagerly waiting for us.

She greets us cheerfully, "Welcome Mr. and Mrs. Nelson. I will escort you to the Doctor's conference room where they are waiting for you to apprise you of the situation. Please don't worry, your babies are going to be alright. We are happy you arrived quickly. This is just a little bump in the road."

As we enter the conference room, the lead doctor stands to welcome us. "Mr. and Mrs. Nelson,  I am Dr. Sam Delong, please take a seat. Let me assure you that your twins are alright but we are planning for them to be delivered shortly via C-section.  It's safer because the surrogate's water broke the day before yesterday. We administered steroids and antibiotics; at that point, she had not started labor. We were able to give her two doses of steroids and we were prepared to discharge her to go home on bed rest. However, when we examined her this morning before discharge, she was already progressing to dilate and in pre-labor. Our efforts to halt the labor were unsuccessful and her labor continued. We summoned you and waited for your arrival. She is prepped and ready to go to the operating room for a c-section. We have just enough time for you to get suited up to witness the birth of your twins. Please, follow me." He gets up and heads out to the obstetrics operating room just down the hall.

We enter the room and nurses wrap us up in surgical gowns, hairnets, gloves, and slippers. It took only a couple of minutes. The Dr shouted, "let's get these boys out into their new world to meet their eager Mom and Dad."

When we got over to Beth, she had been draped and we heard a cry. "Baby boy A is here and all is well. Come around Mom and Dad so you can see your baby." He's so little but not too small. The Dr says, "He's a big 32-week baby. No wonder her water broke. They are crowded and anxious to get out." I like this Dr, he's very personable and charismatic.
