Chapter 12

"Sweetheart, please look at me. Nothing bad is going to happen to our baby girls." I take his hands in mine as we patiently wait in a conference room for a doctor to come in to talk to us. My husband is so shaken up, Benny is waiting outside to give us some privacy. I can feel him quivering deep inside.

In a barely audible voice, "Baby, how do you know? I just know something bad is about to happen. Up until now, all I could produce was babies that died. No matter what I do, why does God punish me for my past?"

I take a deep breath, gather my thoughts. "Darling, stop being so negative and pessimistic. If the babies are born now, all is going to be well. They are big and will be healthy. Please believe me." His eyes are glassy trying to hold back the on-slough of tears. I squeeze his hands, "The doctor will tell us what to expect if they are born tonight. Wait until we have all the information before you get this upset."

The door opens and the Doctor with Benny comes into the room, this is one of the high-risk doctors on the team. "Mr. and Mrs. Nelson. I have good news. [Showing us an ultrasound]

See, your twin girls are doing just fine

See, your twin girls are doing just fine. All is well with them as you can clearly see they are not in distress. Chari is in pre-labor and they will be born soon. We are administering steroids to develop their lungs and gave her medication to slow the labor down. The twins will be born in the next 12-48 hours. Their lungs should be developed enough but the steroids will ensure that if we can delay delivery for at least 12 hours. We have successfully slowed the labor process to nearly nothing and Chari is resting comfortably. Since her water partially broke, only one twin's sac was interrupted, she cannot be delayed from early delivery. Unless there are further complications, the twins will be born naturally. The team does not see any reason to perform a c-section. There are risks associated with the c-section we would like to avoid if possible. Go home, pack your bags, and come right back. The VIP suite is being set up for Chari and you as we speak. Does anyone have any questions?"

I speak up, "Will the twins need to be in the NICU?"

"Mrs. Nelson, the current ultrasound shows they are estimated to weigh well over 6 pounds each which is large at this stage and could be why Chari went into labor. We won't know about the NICU until they are born but I am optimistic they will have very little or no stay. Historically, 36-week twins do better all-around than singletons of the same age. Mom and Dad, go get ready for your baby girls. Be happy about their arrival, they will be here soon for you to hold."

My husband's demeanor relaxes some, and his internal shaking subsided. "Doc, we are not leaving the hospital. Can we have someone bring us our things from home? I don't want to miss anything or the birth of our twins."

The Dr is all smiles, "Okay, wait here. A staff member will take you to your room. Mr. Wagner, we have accommodations for you next to Mrs. Wagner's room. Your wife is doing well like a champ, don't worry." The Dr leaves and a VIP representative comes to escort us to the room.
