Nanny touches my leg and softly says, "Ma'am, I have your boy for you and ready for his bottle." I sit up rubbing my eyes to wake up and discover I had been sleeping for a few hours rather than just a short cat nap.
"Nanny! What happened? Why did we miss feeding them?" I shift my look over to my husband who is already holding a baby with a bottle.
"Mama, it's my fault. I told her to let you sleep and she agreed you needed to rest. I am worried you might have a relapse of the concussion syndrome if you don't adequately rest or get enough sleep. We have some good news too. The doctor checked them out and said there is no need for feeding tubes or IVs right now. If they don't gain weight in the next couple of days, then he will reconsider it. He wants you to try to breastfeed them with the tank supplement system and they will add high-calorie supplements to the breast milk. If that works, it should be all they need. I also told him my plan to take them home. He agreed as long as we have an experienced NICU nurse and a pediatrician to monitor them. I think he's impressed by how well they are doing. Nanny is going to call the twins' pediatrician, Dr. Martin, tomorrow. I hope she is available to look after the boys." Nanny has super credentials but she will need help.
"Well, Sweetie. Since I am not getting my Caribbean vacation, I will forgive you for letting me sleep. I guess I needed it. Trying to get them to breastfeed is going to be a challenge. I hope they catch on quickly so they can gain weight."
Nanny informs me a lactation specialist is coming in to see me later this afternoon. My husband is quite proud he's in charge and getting his every want. He always wants his way and we let him think he is getting it for the most part. Keeps him happy that way.
"Sweetie, did you nap with me? I know you don't want to miss a thing but, you need to sleep too. I don't want you to get sick. Raising all the children is going to be tiring and could compromise our health. We need to be present for them. "
He is looking at me like he does. You know the look. "Mama, I promise you that I will rest for my well-being to fully take care of our kids."
"Pappa, there's something you forgot." He is cradling Baby B after he fed him. I am still feeding Baby A.
"Baby Mama, I have it all covered. What do you mean?" I smile with a smirk. "You forgot a significant thing we need to do."
"Nah, I am sure I didn't forget a single thing. Then tell me, my dearest one, what you think I forgot.."
I clear my throat and ponder how to tell him. I guess just be straightforward with him. "Darling, what are we going to name them? We can't keep calling them Baby A and Baby B. We haven't even talked about it because they were born early before we could discuss it."
He gives me a look, "I have that covered. Aiden and Adam are the names I picked out. What do you think, Mama? Do you like them?"
I just shake my head. "Sweetheart, those are beautiful names. Since I basically picked the girls' names, I think these names are perfectly wonderful. You really did think of everything."
I hold the boy up and look at him. "I think you are Aiden. Do you like your name, baby boy?" He grins that toothless grin only babies can do. What a happy baby and he seems to know his name. "Sweetheart, we need to let Bonnie, Steve, Martha. Patrick, Tony, and James know the boys are here and doing well. I would like to see Bonnie. Maybe Kirk can bring her and Steve over to visit? I really need for them to come soon."
"Mama, got it covered. They are coming over here after supper. I called home while you were sleeping to relay the good news. Bonnie flipped immediately into Mama Bear mode and wants to see for herself you are alright besides meeting the boys. She's concerned about you getting enough rest. Wow, she's demanding, shouting orders at me. She scared me and I had no choice but to go along. After all, she's in charge at home with our other babies."
