(Trigger Warning: Death)
A car came towards him and Yeonjun had to decide if he should go to the other three, standing at the end of the gravel path, or if he should go after Beomgyu. The car got closer and Yeonjun walked to the side of the street, next to him was the little memorial of his parents and Beomgyu's brother. The car sped past them and Yeonjun glanced at the others standing across the road before he turned around and ran off into the forest.
Beomgyu walked deeper and deeper into the woods. The further he got away from the road, the drier it became as the large treetops caught the rain before it could land on the ground.
Beomgyu didn't think about his brother or Yeonjun or about anything at all.
He just walked and walked and walked until he couldn't walk anymore. He fell on his knees and fixed his eyes on the leaves that were laying on the floor in front of him. He felt the hard ground underneath his legs but he didn't care about the uncomfortable position he was sitting in. He didn't care about anything. He didn't want to think at all.
Beomgyu closed his eyes and avoided his surroundings. Forgot about the leaves and the trees and the dirt. He ignored the fresh air and his sweatshirt that was glued onto his body. He didn't think about Yeonjun and the look he had on his face when he realized what was going on. And his hands that were running through his hair and touching his cheek to wipe away his tears. Beomgyu didn't think of his own tears, yet they were running down his face like his eyes were filled with tons of them.
He cried and sobbed and choked on his tears and feelings. His chest tightened more and more, the more his head got filled with thoughts and voices and pictures. His hands were clenched into fists and Beomgyu pressed them down into his thighs until he couldn't feel the pain in them anymore. It was silent around him but his sobs got louder as the trees echoed them back into his face.
He didn't know when this would all stop. He wanted it to stop. Beomgyu didn't want to breathe anymore, didn't want to cry anymore. He wanted nothing to hear or to see. He pressed his eyes shut even though it wouldn't make the pictures in his head go away. When he thought about Yeonjun, his chest squeezed his heart until it felt like blood was coming out of every pore. The hotness inside his sweatshirt burned his skin. It was painful.
It was painful to think about how he died. It should have been him. It should have been Beomgyu because he was the one to kick the ball onto the street. He was the one to run after it and he was the one who wanted to pick it up again but his brother stopped him. He held his arm tight and told him to wait there. Beomgyu waited and waited, tiptoed with his feet as he was excited to continue playing with his brother while their parents were watching and laughing and being happy. He waited and waited and when the blue car came and his brother wasn't to be seen anywhere, he still waited.
He tiptoed slower on his feet and his smile faded just a bit. He tiptoed more to look over the car that stood still against the tree before him. Beomgyu tried to look through the smoke that came from the engine bonnet and he furrowed his brow as he wondered where his brother with his ball was. He called out his name but he didn't reply. Beomgyu needed hours to realize that his brother wouldn't come back. Beomgyu needed hours to realize that he hadn't a brother anymore, that he was an only child now.
Even when his parents ran up to the blue car and looked through the windows of the blue car and around the blue car and under the blue car, Beomgyu waited patiently for his brother to come back to him. He wanted to continue playing. Beomgyu was about to win. He wanted to continue playing.
Beomgyu's knees hurt from the hard ground and his fists that pressed themselves more into his thighs. His head was pounding because of the pain-warped face he made, from his tightly shut eyes and his sore throat that hurt. It hurt so much. It was painful. So painful.
