Zayn
I didn't realise how much I had missed Bradford until I had lived a life not in it. It felt like forever ago since I was here, and it didn't feel like my home anymore. The things that surrounded me seemed familiar, but distantly. But regardless of how far away I had been, and how long it had been since I had been here, this town calmed me. This town was my town.
The Patio is clear when I reach it, something rather strange. The Patio was always occupied, no matter what time of day you went. That was the good thing about it, if you needed someone to talk to, a smoke or a drink, by just going to the Patio you'd find refuge. I was kind of disappointed, because I could really use all three of those things right now.
I sit down on one of the camp chairs and look around at the dark forest that surrounds me. I never found the darkness scary, maybe that's because I simply lived the most during the night. The darkness was nothing to be afraid of compared to the other things I was doing. I feel a sharp pang in my heart as I'm suddenly overcome with nostalgia for those times.
There's a rustling to my left and I turn to see someone emerging from the trees. When my eyes adjust to the figure I realise it's Rico. I grin.
"Zayn? Is that you?" He steps closer and when he sees that it's me, he breaks out into a wide smile. "Shit, man! What the hell are you doing here?"
He bends down and we do the handshake we used to do every day, and he sits beside me. I watch him fiddle with something by his feet and within seconds a lantern is lit and is lighting us up.
"I'm back home until the end of the week," I tell him, watching as he starts rolling up a joint on his lap. "Before school starts up again."
"School? Oh, that's right. You're at the boarding school, huh?"
"College now, mate."
He sticks the joint in his mouth and lights it, glancing over at me with his eyebrow raised slightly. "College? You're shitting me."
I shake my head. "College, my man."
"Zayn Malik in college?" He cries. "Boy, have I seen everything." He inhales some smoke before passing the joint to me.
I accept it gratefully before holding it to my lips, breathing in the heavenly smoke. "It's fucking killing me," I tell him.
"College?"
I take another inhale before passing the joint back to him. I shake my head. "Adulthood."
Rico laughs a little, stretching himself out as he blows out smoke, the whimsy puffs circling in the night air like soft and delicate clouds. "It's not adulthood you hate, mate. It's life down there."
