Chapter Thirty-Six

Everything Tatsuya warned her about had been true.

The training made her want to die, and she almost did die on numerous occasions when she didn't listen to his instructions.

As all things do with time, training did get easier.

The oni became stronger than she was before, far more than she had thought was actually possible.

Perhaps it was the constant traveling that helped. Different terrain, different weather patterns, different altitudes, it all played a part in building up strength.

As well as giving y/n more reasons to hate Tatsuya.

"I'm stuck."

"Oh, what a pity." Tatsuya said flatly before walking along, not bothering to help his travel companion.

"So you're not gonna help me?" y/n demanded.

"Nope, you can do it yourself. I know this because I got stuck there plenty of times, and I managed to get out each time." Tatsuya replied simply with a small scoff before sparing the Crimson Oni a glance, "Although... the first time left me trapped there for a week."

While the Blue Oni wasn't necessarily mean, he wouldn't take away any chances y/n had to learn. Meaning that he'd let her figure things out alone as long as there was a learning opportunity.

Even if there was a possibility she'd die.

During the first few months of their travels, y/n constantly considered killing him in his sleep.

However, each time——

Y/n was poised to strike, ready to take whatever consequences that would follow if she killed the resting oni.

"Oh, yeah, I almost forgot." he mumbled without opening his eyes, "Good job today. You did well."

Y/n halted, processing his words.

...she'd let him live another day.

He praised her for her work before the two of them went to sleep every night. And that was the only reason he was allowed to live.

As weeks turned to months and months turned into a whole year, y/n found that Tatsuya wasn't as intolerable as she believed him to be.

Especially when the two of them berated a merchant about scamming them with poor products and 💩.

Plus, he did let her be a kid from time to time.

He celebrated her birthday, taught her new jutsu, helped her improve her skills, ensured that she got stronger. He'd done everything he promised he'd do.

He even delayed his missions so that the two of them could swing by Sunakagure occasionally. Of course, in typically y/n fashion, she would happily pester Kankuro and spend as much time with Gaara as possible.

They did return to Konoha after the first year, only to see Granny and discuss some things with her. While y/n didn't get to listen in, she got the chance to say hello to the elderly lady.

They were forced to leave just as quickly as they came, Tatsuya suddenly announcing that they had important 💩 to do and limited time to do it.

Fighting was involved so y/n was eager to join.

Traveling wasn't all fun and games with Tatsuya though, especially whenever she was helping him track down missing-nin and investigating the Akatsuki.

Good grief... the Akatsuki...
They had some real strange members.
