It was such a sunny day when you heard the news.

You were chatting away with your new friend Hanawa under a tree shielding you both from the sunlight, laughing at silly jokes as the popsicle melted in your hand. That was your first friend, one that reached towards you on her own not because she wanted anything from you, but because she just wanted to be your friend.

It's only been a few days, but you both were already getting along and hanging out after school. In a way, she was like the other you, usually quiet but is actually really fun once she gets to open up. Somehow it was rarely ever awkward between the both of you. Those were the best days you've ever had since you went to this school.

"Hey, (name)," Hanawa suddenly paused, twiddling with her fingers and looking down with a nervous smile, "I just want to say thank you."

"H-Huh?" You were surprised by her words that seemed to come out of nowhere, "I should be the one thanking you," you laughed bashfully and scratched your head, secretly cursing at yourself for stuttering.

"It's not that," her head dipped further down as she seemed to be struggling to find the right words, "I meant that-"

Then your phone rang, cutting her off as you apologized to her, "sorry," you picked up the phone quickly as soon as you saw Suguru's name on your screen, "Suguru?" You called out cheerily, eagerly waiting for the chance to introduce your new friend to him.

Though it was like talking to an empty well, you could only hear your own voice echoing back to you due to the bad signal. Unconsciously giving Hanawa a small glance, you opened your mouth to speak again.

"...(Name)," his voice rang before you said anything, but the lack of emotions in his voice almost scared you.

"Did something happen?" You asked carefully, your voice lowering and losing its light.

"..." There was silence again, but it didn't last as long as last time as he spoke again, "Haibara was...he passed away."

His words weren't hard to understand, yet it was as if there were some deeper meaning hidden in there, you couldn't comprehend it. It was like water was slowly closing in on you, soaking your feet and slowly rising up to your chest. Your heart beating faster as you know you'll be inevitably drowning in the murky waters, yet you couldn't move your limb. You could only watch as it drowned you, taking your breath away and gradually crushing you under its pressure.

"...(Name)?" Suguru's voice rang again, causing you to blink slowly as you come back to your senses again.

"Sorry, I..." You looked at Hanawa helplessly, trying your best to figure out who to apologise to as your form shook as if it was about to collapse.

"(Name)? Did something happen?" Hanawa's concerned voice sounded so muffled, so far away from you.

You could only stare back hazily, everything around you becoming more unintelligible. It felt like something was clamping on your chest, breathing was almost impossible for you. Hanawa's lips were moving, but you couldn't even vaguely tell what she was saying as the sound of your heartbeat and gasps filled out hearings.

"I-I need to go," you could hear your voice, then everything started spinning as Hanawa's voice was getting further and further away.

Your limbs were moving on their own, you didn't know where they were taking you, you only knew that you had to run. Everything you passed by was alien-like, meshing into a blur as you sprinted. Your heart pounded so hard on your chest that it hurt, wailing for someone to rip it out and break it free from the ribcage holding it down.
