Chapter 10

-- Flashback --

450 years ago

"Toby why do you insist on dragging me to these blasted events" Nick asked his oldest friend, "I simply detest these"

The blonde vampire rolled his eyes at his younger, only in appearance, companion, "Nick you are considered royalty in these parts. It's only proper that you appear at these events"

"I hate it when you're right you know" He growled slightly, fiddling with the cuff of his jacket, "And these clothes are incredibly uncomfortable, 

Tobias laughed softly at his companion, until a certain woman caught his eye. Her silky brown hair flowed down her bare back, her red dress extenuated all of her curves. Her eyes seemed to hold the stars themselves as she caught Toby's eye, "Nick" Toby whispered,

When the older vampire observed Toby and followed his eyeline, he saw that he was focussed on a face he never thought he'd see again, "Katerina" 

Toby gave a friend a look that he didn't notice as he marched towards the Petrova doppelganger. He grasped her arm and twirled her around so she could see him, "Nick" She gasped scanning the vampires face,

"What the bloody hell are you doing here?!"

Toby POV

"He already knew her?" Caroline gasped,

Toby nodded, "They'd met a few years earlier. They had fallen for each other but had never admitted it to each other"

"What does this have to do with me?" Caroline demanded, clearly not liking me talking about Nick and another woman,

"Jealous much barbie?" I laughed making her blush, but before she could respond I started speaking again, "Cut to a few months later, I'd given up pursuing Miss Pierce when I saw how in love the two were"

I knew she didn't intend for me to hear it, but unfortunately Caroline didn't know about vampire hearing, "Filling me with confidence"  she mumbled,

I'd pretended I didn't hear it and continued with my story, "To this day I don't know if I did the right thing. But I also don't regret doing it..."

Third POV

Nick stood in his study, memories of Katherine and their history flooding his mind,

449 years ago

"Nick we must go" Katerina - now Katherine - told her lover as they lay in bed together,

Nick pulled the naked doppelganger down into his bed and peppered kisses down her neck, "No we don't" he insisted placing a kiss on her neck after each word,

"Yes we do!" She laughed pushing him off her, "We have guests on their way, if they find us like this then it will be all over the town before we know it!"

"You're my betrothed Katherine, it doesn't matter if other people know that!" Nick countered, "Let me show the world that I am in love with the most beautiful woman on the planet!"

"This whole ball was your idea my love, it's hardly proper for the hosts to be undressed in bed when their guests arrive"  the younger vamp complained.

"Fine!" Nick groaned, "But just for you"

"Good" She chuckled tapping him on the cheek before gazing at him lovingly,

"I love you Nick" She whispered placing a kiss on his cheek,

"I love you too Katerina"

"She's nothing like you Katerina" Nick whispered, looking out onto the garden, "But after what happened, after what you became. I'm glad she isn't"
