Demelza and put her things in order in what she deemed would be her room form hence on. She asked Jeremy if he wanted to sleep in the room with her or in his own room. Jeremy didn't have to think twice he said, "I sleep with in this room with you." Demelza spent the rest of the day cleaning ang getting the room to where she deemed it sufficient for their comfort. She laid a carpet on carpet on the floor beside Jeremy's bed and Garrick quickly claimed it.

She went out to see if Purdie had started supper, she hadn't. She and Jenny was sitting at the table. She said, the work will now be split three ways. "I am no longer the mistress here. Jeremy and I will do our share of the work." Jenny and Purdie looked at each other she already did that and more. They didn't know what she meant. "Master Poldark will have to give me a wage for my work. I think it best if we take the major jobs and split them between us. I have made a list." They looked at the list realizing they were still getting off easy, but Demelza would no longer be cleaning. Since Jenny does not live in the house our own quarters are ours to clean. They decided on who should do what jobs. Purdie was a little peeved it seems Demelza was now going to do less. Purdie then asked Demelza what is this about? Demelza told them what happened yesterday, Ross not willing to completely give up Elizabeth. Then told her Ross wanted her to be a scullery maid so that is what she will be. Jeremy will be working in the garden. You both get paid for your services do you not? So shall I, I have lived too long working myself from daybreak to well into the evening hours. I refuse to be his indentured servant. My servitude has been paid. I would not work for my father for nothing, I will not to it for Mister Poldark. Jenny and Purdie just raised their eyebrows they have never seen her like this.

Ross came home from the mine went in to look for his wife found her feeding Jeremy in the kitchen. He sat down expecting his food to be brought to him although he wondered why they were not in the dining room. Demelza spoke up. "Sur your place is in the dining room this be for us servants." Ross said, "Demelza you are my wife." Demelza looked coldly at her husband, "you have had my services in maintaining this home for free. I have to be here for Jeremy, I expect a wage as any other employee. Jeremy will be helping me in the garden, and I will expect a wage for him also. I am done working for you for nothing. I did that when I thought I was your Dog star, your one love, I now realize I am your scullery maid so that is what I'll be. As far as I am concerned, who are free to go to Elizabeth anytime you want. We have split the household chores and hope to have much more free time, she showed him the copy of the chores split. She turned to go to the stove. She called over her shoulders "and any wifely duties I will not be preforming."

She called Purdie who slowly came in with a face of doom on. Demelza said, "Purdie food is ready to serve the master." Ross yelled, "I will have my son and wife eat supper with me." Demelza turned, "I do not consider myself your wife, I was just someone who you felt comfortable in taking, until Francis died, and your real love became involved. I have suffered the last humiliation of being your wife. As I said, I am done. I cannot leave but I will no longer be treated as your wife. As your employee I will get more respect. Since Jeremy has already eaten, please go to the dining room. Tomorrow evening, he will dine with you. Lunch and breakfast he will dine with me."
