CASEY HAD BEEN HOME NO LESS THAN AN HOUR. Lowly played rock music filled her room. She bobbed her head as her pencil glided across her page noting what she believed was meaningless math she would never use. Her window was open just a crack letting a light breeze blow through. Her kiss with Jonathan was still heavily on her mind. Every now and again she would feel the ghost touch of his lips on hers and she would smile.
Her first kiss. And though it wasn't with the person she imagined almost her entire life it would be with. It was still with someone she cared about deeply. But now, it left the question of uncertainty. Was she confusing her feelings with Jonathan for something else? Was she simply reaching for someone—anyone to be there when for a moment it felt like no one was? That was what she needed to figure out. She'll add it to the list.
Concentrated on the complexity of the numbers in front of her, she chewed on the end of her pencil. A terrible habit her dad has tried to break her out of since she was five. He's obviously done a wonderful job. She blew out a frustrated breath and flung herself back into her chair before hearing a loud crack just outside her window.
Her head whipped to the side, her eyes focused out onto the trees. There was nothing. But she stood from her seat anyway. Approaching the window, slowly, her gaze never broke away in fear she might miss something. Her heart hammered—her hands trembled. Casey knew something was out there...watching her. Whether it be someone playing a cruel joke or something worse. The feeling never dissipated. It lingered.
She rested her hands on the window sill, ready to open the window completely when her radio started to cut. Static coming through instead. Then her lights began to flicker. She looked around her, scared and confused. Her breathing became panicked, and she made the mistake of looking back out her window.
It was a sight she would never forget. Just at the tree line. Nearly in the shadows. It was tall, long arms, pale, and—it had no face. This was something you only saw in movies, this wasn't real. She was dreaming she concluded to herself. She fell asleep while doing her homework and any second, she would wake up. It was just...staring at her. Like a next meal.
All the creature had to do was take one measly step forward and Casey booked it for the telephone. The first thing she did was dial the station. Knowing all too well her father wouldn't be at his desk, she rung Flo.
She bounced impatiently on her heels, "C'mon. Pick up." It rang and rang. She almost pushed the hook down, thinking, the one time she's not at her desk. But then a voice.
"Hawkins Police Department. How can I assist you?"
"Flo!" Casey said maybe a little too excitedly.
"Casey? What's wrong, sweetie?"
