Steve,
I'm not entirely sure why I'm writing this. Probably because I'll never have the guts to say it to your face and somehow putting it on paper makes it easier. To be fair, I can make mistakes this way. I've already rewritten this paragraph ten times now.
I know, this past year things have been a little different with us. You'd been with Tommy and Carol more which led to me hanging out with Jonathan. Then Nancy came along, and things really changed. We became passersby's in the hall and I hated it. I missed you. I missed my best friend.
"I can't believe you got into it with those Hawkins Lab guys..."
Casey spoke discreetly through clenched teeth, "Steve, we're not supposed to talk about that."
He throws his hand out in front of him and collapses backwards onto his bed, "Case, we're in my house. Unless they have supersonic hearing, I think we're okay." She rolls her eyes, but doesn't say anything else on it, just to be safe. "When did you become such a badass, huh?"
She shrugs her shoulder with a sly smirk, "Guess it's just in my blood..."
For a while, I blamed you. I mean, yes, it was mostly your fault. But I was to blame too. I made assumptions about someone when I shouldn't have and that caused me to push myself farther away from you than necessary. And yes, I'm talking about Nancy.
"Hey, what do you think I should get Nancy for Christmas?"
Casey looks up from the plate of food in front of her to the boy now sitting across from her. She speaks between bites, "Uh, I don't know. What does she like?"
He leans back in the chair, crossing his arms over his chest, "I don't know..."
Her brow arches, "You don't know what your girlfriend likes?"
"Well, you know...we're still in the early stages..."
Casey chuckles softly, "Then talk to her. Try and get a few ideas."
He snaps his finger at her like some bona fide genius, "I'm gonna go call her." He shoots up from his seat and presses a quick kiss to the top of her head as he passes, "Thanks, Case."
"Don't be too obvious!"
But, Steve, honestly. Seeing you two together, it hurts, because I like you. Hell, I might be in love with you. And seeing you with her after years of thinking one day that would be me, I couldn't handle it. Sometimes I still can't. But I see how happy she makes you, and if you're happy then I'm happy.
"Are you sure you're okay with this? I know it was only supposed to be you and me tonight."
Casey shook her head faking the best unbothered expression she could muster, "Oh, yeah. It's totally cool." She wasn't sure if he believed her, but whether he did or not, it wouldn't change the fact that Nancy was walking toward them as they stood outside the arcade.
