Ellie skulked around the school parking lot, smoking a cigarette, and then another cigarette, and then another one. She was debating whether or not to just go home, or go to classes, knowing that even though it was the last day before spring break, she would still get in shit if she just left. Not to mention that she didn't really want to be alone after the events that took place last night.
She'd already missed her first and second period, lunch was going to start in 5 minutes. "Fuck it" she thought, throwing her cigarette on the ground and stubbing it out with her shoe.
The school cafeteria was bustling with people, all talking over each other and laughter echoing around the room. It was a disgusting display of humanity, each and every one of them so far up their own asses, Ellie was surprised they could still function.
Days like this would've been made better by the presence of Billy Hargrove. Even though he was the secondary crowned prince of Hawkins High, taking the place of Steve Harrington in his first year here, he was still the best thing to happen to Ellie.
They used to sit at the far end of the school field smoking cigarettes, amongst other things, and ridiculing every person who walked past. People loved him, as they should've done, but they didn't know the real him.
Ellie did, she was the one he used to talk to about his troubles at home, and complained to her whenever his kid sister pissed him off. She wasn't sure how or why they became so close, but she knew that he hated being there just as much as she did, the only difference was that she wasn't as much in the limelight as he was, therefore not many people knew who she was, let alone that they were friends.
She chewed on the inside of her cheek as she approached the food bar, grabbing an apple from the fruit stand and a bottle of water.
"As long as you're into band, or science..." a voice chimed above the rest.
Ellie turned her head to watch as some guy stood up on one of the tables, strolling down it whilst calling out to the people around him.
"Or parties" he continued with his voice laced with a sneer. "Or a game where you toss BALLS into laundry baskets" he shouted directly at the basketball team.
Ellie smiled, still standing at the corner of the cafeteria, watching as the team captain shouted at the guy. "You want something, freak?" He called, causing Ellie to roll her eyes at him for the second time that day.
The man on the table turned his hands outwards and pointed his index fingers up into horns, placing them against his head and sticking his tongue out.
Ellie laughed quietly to herself, enjoying the display this man was putting on. She must've seen him around school at some point, but then again she never paid much attention and probably wouldn't be able to pick any one of these high school kids out of a line-up.
The man smirked at the team captain, clearly having fun winding people up. He strolled back to the other end of the table talking to his friends, and then shouted "killing the kids!" as he jumped off the other end, scaring a prissy blonde girl half to death as he did so.
Ellie laughed a little harder at this, catching the attention of a curly haired boy sitting on the same table as the man who was speaking out.
She gave him a tight lipped smile, before turning around and walking out of the cafeteria, letting the door slam behind her even though someone was about to walk through it.

Ellie took a bite out of her apple, rewinding the cassette player in her hand, listening to Shoot To Thrill for the hundredth time already that day.
