I had a hard time getting to sleep that night. In a very quite voice, Walker hummed for hours in the bunk below me. Even though I couldn't see him, I somehow knew his eyes were piercing right through the bottom of my bed.
* * *
Groggily squinting my eyes open, I turned over on my side forgetting where I was momentarily. I almost fell out of the bed when I jumped, being faced right opposite Walker whose eyes were staring right through me.
"Wh-" I stuttered in shock, "What are you- Walker?"
"You make these funny little noises when you sleep, Novak", he smiled coldly, never blinking, "I was listening all night. I couldn't sleep because of it".
He took a bold step closer to me, our faces at the same level.
"In fact, I even thought about coming up there and squeezing your little throat until you slept for good".
Stunned, I stared at him unable to speak. There was an uncomfortable silence that passed between us before he suddenly burst out laughing. I grimaced at the sound of his sadistic-sounding laugh.
"I'm just kidding!" Walker grinned wider, but his eyes remained dark and deadening.
Making me jump again, the cell door clicked open and it was time to get up. Walker laughed at my obvious jittery attitude and then trailed out of the cell, humming to himself again.
I lay there for a couple of minutes, unsure of how to process what had just happened. I had never encountered such strange and unnerving behaviour before. It was just a joke, I told myself with uncertainty.
Shaking off my tension, I dragged myself out of bed and into the bathrooms, bringing a new set of clothes with me. As soon as I saw an empty shower, which was a rare sight at Wayward prison, I jumped in, ripped my clothes off and lifted my head up in delight when the steaming hot water hit my face.
After I had finished my glamorous morning routine, I headed to the canteen. A slight smile made its way onto my face when I saw Dean and Gabriel sitting opposite each other and genuinely getting along. However, my smile dropped instantly when I saw who was sitting next to Dean.
"Cas", Dean called, his eyes bright when he noticed me.
Uneasily, I made my way over to the table. Dean had an apple ready for me and I gave him an appreciative but still cautious smile.
"Novak!" Walker acknowledged, sitting comfortably next to Dean.
"I'll just sit here then", I muttered to myself quietly, perching myself down next to Gabriel and opposite Walker.
"You know each other?" Dean asked.
"We're roommates", Walker answered, the whole time never taking his eyes off of me.
I nibbled my apple, nervously watching Dean and Walker start talking to each other and enjoying each other's company.
"You okay, Novak?" Gabriel nudged me, watching me strangely.
All I could do was nod as I wanted to listen to their conversation.
"-and then I smacked him across the face and left him there", Walker finished whatever he was saying.
Dean laughed in response and I tilted my head at him with bafflement. Surely he didn't like this creepy, psychotic man?
"I like this guy", Dean announced approvingly, looking at my unimpressed face with confusion for a moment before Walker continued speaking.
We broke eye contact and Dean's attention reverted back to Walker. My eyes dropped down and I felt like someone had fly kicked me in the throat. Their arms were touching. Their arms were touching. Their arms were touching.
