Today was the day.
When I woke up, the first striking thought that banged in my head was panic. I still hadn't planned on what to tell April.
Luckily, I had a short amount of time to figure it out in the canteen. I hadn't eaten properly for days. Too many distractions.
Gabriel and Lucifer were sitting next to each other in the canteen which took me by surprise. They seemed to be getting on much better than usual. When Lucifer beckoned me over, I gave them both a small smile and sat down opposite them with my tray.
"So, is she still coming?" Lucifer asked immediately.
"I think so", I responded with a quick, worried sigh.
Gabriel looked between us with confusion.
"Have I missed something?" Gabriel expectantly questioned me.
"His girlfriend is visiting him today", Lucifer started, and I braced myself for Gabriel to be told the horrible truth, but Lucifer simply added, "and that's all there is to it".
I gave him a subtle, thankful smile and felt myself relax massively.
"Novak has a girlfriend?" Gabriel frowned, "But what about Winchester?"
Why did everyone keep assuming that Dean and I were in some kind of secret relationship? Was it really that obvious?
"Dean is...was just a friend", I replied, trying to hide my anguish, "Nothing more, nothing less".
Lucifer was watching me curiously. He almost looked disappointed in me, as if it was my fault that Dean decided to call everything off with me. Of course Lucifer didn't know about any of that, however. I was trying to forget about it, let alone tell anyone else.
The conversation had died out. Every one of us seemed to be in a state of deep thought. Morning passed very quickly, too quickly if anything. I hadn't been given nearly enough time to think. Or maybe I simply didn't want to think about it, and I kept distracting myself without even realising. Maybe I have had too much time. Why was I hyperventilating?
The canteen was beginning to clear out. No matter how much I didn't want to, I forced myself to stand up and exit via the hallway. Dean was nowhere to be seen, to my confusing state of half relief and half disappointment.
In the distance, near the far end of the hallway, I spotted the big double doors which lead into the visitation room. This visitation was different to Balthazar's. This time, there were no windows to block any contact and there were no phones to speak to each other on. There were only tables and chairs, like some sort of fucked up opening evening.
Slowly approaching the doors, I desperately tried to calm myself down but nothing seemed to be working. A prison guard noticed me lurking and she made her way over to me cautiously, holding a clipboard tightly in her hands.
"You here for visitation?" she questioned.
I nodded hesitantly. She pushed her glasses up to the brim of her nose and scanned the clipboard with her sharp eyes.
"Name?"
I was so nervous that I hadn't suddenly forgotten how to socialise properly without making an idiot of myself. Actually, to be fair, nothing much had changed.
"April Kelly", I replied, misunderstanding the question.
"Your name, moron", she rolled her eyes.
"Oh. Castiel Novak", I quickly answered.
She traced a finger down the clipboard's page. Please, by some mistake, don't let my name be on there. Please let there be an error.
