A Birthday Special

Kai's situation was very critical. When you look back at where we are, it is almost like we are back to the first point.

Everyone around was frustrated, to say the least, by how they allowed matters to turn like this. More importantly, they were terrified; terrified of losing Kai, terrified that he would suffer for the rest of his life, terrified that he would remain mentally ill, terrified that he would never touch a ball again.

At the very least, the primary fear was eased somehow when a few moments later, his blood pressure started normalizing. Dr. Peter, the surgeon, passed by as well to fix the artery and they informed the family that he was out of the woods but they would keep an eye on him.

Dr. Carter headed to see where Dr. Alfred was, but he was interrupted by Kai's parents. Inside the room, Sophia and Lea were sitting beside Kai, one at each side.

Sophia: "I think I am losing faith. He would never return like he was, would he?"

Lea: "To be honest, I am not sure, but I would take him in any form; mentally unstable, paralyzed, silent,... anything."

Sophia: "Of course, it is just that my heart is aching for him."

Lea: "It seems like he has been tortured for these past months."

Sophia: "He was"

Lea: "It is past 12:00, you know what day it is?"

Sophia knew the answer quite well. She had been thinking of a way to celebrate Kai's birthday given the circumstances, but right now any form of happiness seemed way too far to catch.

Sophia (tearing up): "His birthday, Happy birthday Kai!"

Lea smiled sadly. This had to be one of the most depressing birthdays anyone could have had. The girl tried to lighten the mood a bit by asking her about last year's party.

Lea: "You remember that time last year when we couldn't come to London and were calling him, but suddenly he left the phone and ran (smiling)."

Sophia: "It was one of those days when he was quite hyperactive and just jumping everywhere. I prepared a party in the garden, and we were waiting for the Chelsea boys. That's when you called, but he was too busy running after Balou to have his slipper. "

Lea: "I think that's your everyday morning."

Sophia (laughing): "pretty much. He kept running after him while I was trying to prepare the table and suddenly me and the table were soaked in water."

Lea: "OMG."

Sophia: "Balou jumped in the pool, Kai after him. He splashed like half of the water on me and the garden."

Lea: "Yeah, my brother is crazy."

Sophia: "It doesn't end here. I was really mad and kept shouting, only to be surprised by him picking me up and throwing me in the pool as well."

Lea: "Ok, I would kill him if I were you."

Sophia: "Exactly, my hair was ruined, my make-up, my dress. I am not sure, but I think I tried to drown him right there. He just kept trying to kiss me until I gave up, then,.. (sophia blushing).. OK let's skip this part "

Lea: "OMG you didn't, there are literally people coming."

Sophia: "C'mon, it was his birthday.."

Lea: "Anyway, I don't want to know anything about my brother's sex life."

Sophia (laughing): "Of course, anyway, the problem is I gave the garden's door code to the boys for a surprise."

Lea: "Oh no."

Sophia: "Yes, they were decent enough to quickly turn back, but it was the most embarrassing shit ever."

Lea: "It seems like ruining birthdays is a habit."

Sophia: "It is, I ran upstairs trying to quickly dress up and fix whatever was left from my hair and make-up and went back downstairs to find Kai sitting with his soaked shorts, the rest of our clothes still on full display beside the pool, and him and the boys laughing their hearts out eating a literally wet cake."

Lea: "Ok, he is an idiot."

Sophia: "Agreed."

Lea: "I bet they are giving you a hard time about that day."

Sophia: "Surprisingly, they were mature enough not to mention it ever again, but who are we kidding, of course they remember it every time they see me."

Lea: "OMG Kai, a hopless case"

Sophia: "Oh, or that birthday when I lost him in the elevator."

Lea: "Sorry what?"

Sophia: "We were going to that fancy restaurant at the top of a 120-story tower. I spent days trying to plan this. We entered the elevator and I told him that we would be having a private balcony, but I was having everyone of his friends at the restaurant. I went off at the 80th floor and turned back to find the elevator going up and Kai was still inside. "

Lea: "Why didn't he come out?"

Sophia: "He later told me that he closed his eyes because the journey was too long. Ignore him."

Lea: "He is unbelievable."

Sophia: "Anyway, I said it would be fine, he would just get back down. Instead, he went out on the last floor and kept searching for me there. He sat down on a balcony he found and just waited. "

Lea: "Why didn't he call you?"

Sophia: "He thought this was part of a surprise and didn't want to ruin it. I called him and told him to get down to the 80th floor. But guess what, they were two connected towers, so he went towards the other one in the opposite direction and got back down. "

Lea: "Don't continue."

Sophia (laughing): "He was swearing he was on the 80th floor and I couldn't find him anywhere, until one of the waiters realised where the problem must be and went to guide him from the other building. It literally took him an hour. "

Lea: "So, we shouldn't be surprised by anything that happens today."

Sophia: "One of those birthdays will be the end of me, I swear. I guess today it was very close."

Lea (smile fading away): "Yeah, but let's hope he wakes up better and we can celebrate him surviving this extremely tough year."

Sophia: "Let's hope so. Anyway, I am just glad he is still here, after all what happened and all the time we were close to losing him. "

Lea: "So, I guess next birthday will be back at the garden."

Sophia (laughing): "The best birthdays are garden birthdays. That's obvious."

Lea: "Without access code to the boys"

Sophia: "Certainly, never again."
