The group was quiet as they made their way toward the Pokémon Center. Professor Sycamore had mentioned needing to pick up a few things at his lab before they left so the kids had decided to stop and buy any provisions they might need while they waited.
Perhaps, Ash thought almost two hours later. We should have gone with the Professor and left the shopping to the girls.
After gathering the items necessary for a journey; food, Oran and Pecha berries, and potions, he and Clemont had retreated to a fountain in the square to wait for Serena and Bonnie to finish their shopping. Of course, the girls' definition of shopping was trying on every accessible item of clothing. It was a concept that both Ash and Clemont struggled to comprehend.
"How much longer are they going to be?" Clemont commented, slouching beside Ash, looking bored out of his mind.
"I don't know," Ash sighed as he munched on a sandwich. "Feels like they've been in there forever!"
"Pi...ka," Pikachu agreed with a tired nod.
"I think what we need to do," Clemont said. "Is find something to preoccupy ourselves while they blow all our money in there."
"Great idea!" Ash exclaimed, grinning, looking pumped up suddenly. "Are you thinking what I am thinking, Pikachu?" He looked to his partner who nodded and wagged its tail excitedly. "Clemont, let's have a battle!"
"Here?" Clemont sweat-dropped. "But there's no battlefield here..." He briefly looked down at Luxray who was dozing contentedly at his feet.
"So?" Ash demanded, leaping to his feet. "This area is huge! It would make a perfect field! Come on, Clemont! What do you say?"
Clemont pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose and smiled, all thoughts of the non-existent battlefield going out the window at the thought of a battle challenge. "You're on, Ash! Chespin! Let's go!" He opened the poke ball and Chespin appeared, arms folded, looking determined as it stared Pikachu down.
"So you're going to battle with Chespin?" Ash said, nodding thoughtfully. "Great! A Grass-type like Chespin should be an equal match for Pikachu. What do you say, buddy?"
"Pi...ka!" Pikachu said happily.
Clemont got to his feet and the two friends backed off from the table to an open patch of grass behind it. "Ready?" Clemont asked.
"Ready! Pikachu! Electroball!"
"Dodge it, Chespin!"
Pikachu leaped up in the air and a large ball of electricity formed at the tip of its tail. It tossed it like a baseball. Chespin, heeding its trainer's call, jumped clear of the attack and landed on the grass in a weird martial arts stance.
"Great job, Chespin!" Clemont shouted. "Now use Pin Missile!"
"CHES...PIN!" Huge bulbs burst from Chespin's quills and flew at Pikachu who braced itself for an impact.
"Pikachu! Dodge that and use Quick Attack!"
The attack was too quick for the mouse pokemon though and it struck Pikachu head-on, sending it flying backward and crashing to the ground in front of Ash.
"Pika...CHU!" the Pokémon quickly shook off the attack and crossed its arms, staring Chespin down.
"Not bad, Clemont," Ash said, fiddling with his hat, grinning, as though he was already coming up with a plan to beat his friend. The gears were turning. An idea was beginning to form...
"Not bad yourself, Ash," Clemont responded. "Now, Chespin! Keep Pikachu busy with Vine Whip!"
"Hah!" Ash laughed. "Just what I was waiting for!"
