"Everyone, welcome to the Ruin of the Stars."
Ash looked up at Elizabeth's announcement and squinted through the sunlight at the looming structure rising from the gloom before them. At first glance, there appeared to be nothing besides fog, but as they began to draw nearer, the outline of the once great fortress emerged from the whiteness. It kind of reminded Ash of the Scary House. The roof appeared half caved in and the walls were full of holes, as though something big and strong had tried to blast through.
At his side, Serena let out a gasp as she too got her first look at the ruins. "This place is incredible," she breathed, scanning the clearing. "I can't imagine how it must have looked before all of this!"
"It looks like a bunch of plain old rocks to me," Bonnie grumbled as she staggered up the hill behind them. "Clemont!" she shouted back the way they'd come. "Get a move on! We're all waiting on you!"
Clemont's wheezing could be heard from a mile away. "I...I'm coming...just...just a minute!"
Bonnie put her hands on her hips and frowned at her brother as he came stumbling up a few moments later and practically collapsed on the ground before her. Ash could still hear her chiding her brother even as he moved to investigate the ruins further.
"What is this place?" Ash asked, taking note of the weird inscriptions carved into the crumbling pillars. "Some sort of monument?"
"This is supposedly where Hasent crash-landed the first time he came to our planet," Elizabeth explained as she staggered over the rubble. "Fletchling!" she called to her Pokemon. "I want you to do an aerial sweep of the mountainside, all right? Make sure Takito hasn't made it past Team Rocket."
"Fletch!" the bird gave a nod and swooped down over the hill, disappearing from view.
"Do you really think Takito could've broken past them already?" Serena asked, reaching for a poke ball in case the alien decided to show himself, and glancing over the edge of the mountain to the tiny speck of green where they'd left Team Rocket as a barricade.
"He's incredibly powerful," the older girl responded. "And I wouldn't put anything past him. If he's determined to kill Hasent, then I doubt Team Rocket will stand a chance. Oh, don't worry," she added, seeing their frightened expressions. "He won't kill them. Call it a fail-safe of his. Hasent learned it years ago. For every innocent life Takito take, the more of his power is drained. The others will be fine. We just have to focus on finding the...look out!"
There was a flash of light from the nearby boulders. Seeing it, Elizabeth immediately reacted, whipping around and kicking out with a low sweep, knocking Ash's legs out from underneath him and lunging for Serena, knocking them both to the ground. The Dragon Pulse shot over their heads and exploded into some rocks in the distance.
"Is everybody all right?" Grant shouted, hearing the noise and running up behind them. Bonnie was with him and Clemont appeared a moment later.
"Yeah...we're okay!" Ash responded for all of them as he jumped back to his feet, looking over at Elizabeth, who was paying no attention to them but was scanning the clearing for the location of the attacker.
"What was that?" Clemont gasped, reaching for Bunnelby's poke ball. "A Pokemon?"
"We're about to find out!" Elizabeth snapped. "Quilladin!" she called forth her partner. "Use Pin Missile on these rocks!" The grass-type complied. The attack hit and a growl could be heard. Moments later, a Tyrunt sprang forward from the shadows.
"TYRUNT!" it bellowed, sucking in a breath of hot air, steam beginning to shoot from its nostrils.
"He's gonna use Flamethrower!" Clemont yelled.
