You told yourself not to get attached. Especially not to a foreign hockey player. Professional, to make the equation even better. You were only 18 and in the fall, you would be going to Stanford, Columbia, or Julliard. Full rides - or close to it - to both of them.

Your parents said he was bad for your grades, which he might have been, but at least you got to take an athlete to prom.

"For your graduation gift, I want to bring you back home with me. Just for a few weeks."

"A few weeks? David that's a long time, I have to get ready for school." Your breathing started to get shallow, you were on the verge of a panic attack.

"You haven't even decided which school you're going to." He said, trying to get you to say yes. He was laying on your bed as you tried packing your things. You were going to your grandparent's house in Virginia for the weekend, leaving David. "I personally want you to go to Columbia or Julliard because I go to New York a lot, but it's your future and I want you to be happy."

You sat down at your computer chair, trying to keep your breathing steady. He was talking about the future when you wanted everything to be simple. Complicated never worked for you outside of school.

"What's wrong?" He spun you around, making you look him in the eyes.

"I don't want to get attached. I don't like complicated things. You- you're a professional hockey player. I'm going to college. You're in another country when I'm home and if you aren't, it's just, I just don't think we should get too attached." You let everything out, not thinking about how it would affect him.

"Okay. So what do you want to do?"

"Stay with you."

He laughed at your ambivalence, knowing this was how you always were. Didn't matter what it was. "Then we'll stay together."

"But things will get complicated and I'll get attached."

He looked at you, "And?"

"Fine. I'll go home with you this summer. I just have to check dates for orientation and plan around that."

"I love you." He kissed you and held you close. You just smiled at him, not wanting to say anything. "Right. I'll hold off on that for a while."
