I walked towards James' car, my face beet red. He had offered to give me a ride and I had shamelessly accepted. I had already done something stupid, what's the harm in another one?
I climbed into the passenger seat. The seats were made of very expensive looking leather with a sweet scent swirling around the car. I gave James Jess' address and sat fidgeting with the belt around me. They say an idle mind is a devil's workshop. My mind wandered back to the time at the flat. That was my devil. I had truly been trying to forget it.
After seeing the grief in his eyes, I had decided to do something in a split-second decision. I had reached over and hugged him. I had wrapped him in a hug, smelling a faint woodsy scent from his cologne, my hands had wrapped around him and seemed pathetically small against his larger back. I might have also felt the hard muscles of his back, but that was a talk for another time. Not like I didn't have enough blood rushing to my face already.
Yeah sure, go ahead and say, meh it was just a hug man. Chill out. But that's not it. How many times do you hug a hot stranger, who has gone out of his way to help you out despite knowing who the fuck you are? Who made blood swirl low in my belly causing a ruckus in my heart, despite me not knowing who he is? Not to mention that I had been piss-drunk. Yeah, go ahead and say that now.
Back to point, I had been hugging him. Probably enjoying the embrace too much. When we had returned to our normal positions, he looked at me, confusion and shock apparent in his eyes. Shock reigning over the prior.
"If you weren't like that, I don't even know what would have happened to me. You saved my life and you saved your friend's. If there is any reason either of us are alive right now, it is you." I told him looking into his eyes. Immensely and annoyingly gorgeous hazel eyes, that is. I mentally kicked myself. Wincing, I looked over at him. My suspicion was correct, he had noticed. Now confusion reigned over shock. Go me! Yaayy!
We hadn't talked much after that, just made it to his car.He cleared his throat, drawing my attention back to the present.
"You were talking about Jeff? How do you know him?" He enquired.
"I didn't know his name, just know that you saved him." I shot a glance at him and noticed that his eyebrows were furrowed. I continued, "You may not believe it and I do understand why, but I have been having these...... Dreams? Memories? To be honest I don't even know what to call it. Most of it had to do with your childhood. That was until the day you died.... Well, at least I thought you did. Clearly not though."
I recounted a couple of my dreams to him. The one where his parents played dead and had tumbled him down and tickled him. He smiled tenderly at that, a hint of sorrow touching his features. Another one where he and a classmate had gotten cornered in the lockers by bullies. They had been there for the other guy, but James had stood up for him. He was standing in the principal office all bruised and injured. The other guys and he had been suspended for a week. But for some reason he had been elated.
The car glided through the streets. It was a weekend, so the roads were almost empty this early in the morning. The silence was deafening. I couldn't bear it.
"I know it's a bit weird—" I started.
"I've had dreams too." He confessed, eyes never wavering off the road.
It took me a few moments to pick my jaw off the floor. So, that meant..... Oh my fucking god. He had been having dreams of me too? I glanced up at him and found his gaze on me, confirming my doubts. I tried to talk, but no words seemed to come out. I cleared my throat. Once. Twice.
Out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed his lips press into a thin line, the corner of his lips inching up slightly. Was he trying not to laugh? How audacious of him.
