(Y/n)'s POV
The days dragged on without end. Our hearts felt heavy, tears came easily, and sleep seemed like a distant dream. Soon, days turned into weeks, and before I knew it, a month had gone by, with hope slowly fading away. The hardest part was the feeling of helplessness, just waiting and waiting...
"Is there anything else?" I breathed out a weary sigh. I had managed to postpone my return to work for a large amount of time, but there's only so much time a boss can give for a boyfriend lying in a coma.
The customer shook their head and handed me the cash, which I accepted before giving them their change. As soon as they walked away, the next person in line approached. When our eyes met, a wave of irritation washed over me—it felt as if life was intent on bringing me down at every opportunity.
"Hi, what can I get for you?" I looked away, not wanting to meet Celeste's gaze. I didn't want her to notice how much I was struggling; the dark circles under my eyes were a clear indication of my fatigue and misery. I also remembered that she wasn't allowed in here anymore after our fight in the lobby, but I just didn't have the energy to deal with that today.
"A medium iced mocha and a strawberry danish." Her voice was unexpectedly soft, a difference from her usual sharp tone.
I entered the prices into the register. "That'll be $1.89."
(Prices in the 50s were low, VERY low. I still think this might be too much in my opinion since coffee was about .30cents but I couldn't find the price of a danish or a mocha in the 50s on Google for some reason so I just guessed.)
"(Y/n)," she breathed my name with a heavy sigh, "I'm really sorry."
Startled, I glanced up to find her face filled with empathy. "What?"
She placed the exact amount for her order on the counter, her voice coming out rushed. "For all the things I did to you and for what happened to Anakin, I hope he wakes up." It was as if saying sorry was a foreign concept to her, and it probably was. Before I could respond, she turned and walked to the pick-up area, waiting for her items.
"Celeste," I said softly, and she glanced my way, just a slight turn of her head. "Thank you."
She nodded, then turned her gaze elsewhere. I never imagined that Celeste would be the one to come to me and say she was sorry. I also didn't believe I could find it in myself to forgive her after all the hurt and anger she had caused. The wounds were still fresh, the scars still tender. But now, as I stood there, everything that happened between us just felt so insignificant now. When I really think about it, she did me a big favor—without her, I never would have found my way to him.
It was strange how life worked, how one moment of pain could lead to something so beautiful. I quickly wiped away my tears, not wanting to dwell on these thoughts since at any moment they could cause me to break down and I already made a promise with myself that I wouldn't do that today. I composed myself and focused on the next person in line. "What can I get for you today?"
The customer, a middle-aged man with a friendly demeanor, glanced at the menu board before meeting my gaze. "I'll have a large coffee, please. Black." He placed the exact change in-front of me, he was a regular here so he was well aware of the price and already had it cupped in his hand.
