"Have you reached a decision?" Bertha and Liz sat on opposing sides of the two Starlings, both curious as to what their answers would be. The two got along great. They would know. They'd been watching, but that didn't make their circumstances any less strange.
For a moment, the two sat in silence, Daya looking to her brother and exchanging a glance with him. Both knew what they wanted, as indicated by the nodding, and eventually, Percy spoke up. "I'm happy you found my sister after all these years. It's been so nice finally spending time with her and letting her reunite with the rest of our family. But... I don't think I can adopt her.
"I love my sister a lot, but I have kids- Her niece and nephews, and they're about her age at the moment. It'd be weird raising them alongside my sister — their aunt — and while my mom would love to take her, she's... well... We all saw her in the hospital, and from what the doc's been saying, handing her another child wouldn't be a good idea." Percy then closed off what he was saying, seeming a bit nervous but overall firm with his response. This did appear to be what he wanted, but he wasn't the only one they were looking to ask.
"Understood," Bertha replied, giving Percy a nod before turning to Daya. "What about you, Daya? What do you want to do?"
"Oh we talked already. We both agree that it's weird," Daya said simply, gently swinging her legs from where she sat. "We still want to see each other though and stay in contact, which I don't think Miss Toriel will have any problems with."
"Oh?" Already, the woman was raising an eye eyebrow, seeming somewhat annoyed by the monster being brought up, but overall she was... trusting that Toriel had good intentions. Decent ones at least. They'd talked many times now, and while they didn't fully see eye to eye, they did both want what was best for the children... "Is Miss Toriel that nice?"
"Well yeah," replied Daya, still as casual as ever. "I know you guys don't like her, but she took care of me in the Underground, and she's still taking care of me and all of my friends now that we're back. She's clingy, but not mean. She wouldn't keep me from seeing my family."
Ah. Everything seemed to be lining up. What Toriel said and what the kids were saying, even now when Daya had been away from them for a good moment. While it could just be her wanting to be around her friends, the child's words seemed genuine. And that was honestly all the two workers could ask for.
"Does mandatory visitation sound fine?" Liz asked, looking between the two siblings as she brought up her clipboard. Once again, the two exchanged glances of their own before giving her a nod.
"Sure."
"Once a month maybe. At the very least on the holidays," Percy added, watching Liz nod as she jotted everything down. "Do you still like cooking, Daya? Asking for a friend."
"Duh!" The child then snickered as she shoved her older brother, only to then receive a light shove in return.
"Ahem." Unfortunately, Bertha didn't know about allowing them to roughhouse, even if it was light teasing. Truly, even after all this time, Percy and Daya Starling were still very much siblings. "In that case, Daya, we'll be taking you back home today. Mr Starling, we'll be in touch, and we'll get you in contact with Daya's foster mom so that you can talk."
"Sounds good."
"Finally, I can go somewhere that smells good."
"Smells good eh?" Already, he was reaching out to grab his sister off her chair, but Daya had quickly dodged his hands and fled from her seat, now standing by the corner with a cheeky grin.
