"What do you mean you found my dad?!" Vera's high-pitched voice rang throughout the house, the girl voicing her disbelief loud and clear, which at this point... this wasn't unusual.

"It means exactly what we said. We found your dad," Bertha replied, trying so hard to not look annoyed in the presence of the defiant child. "He's alive, and he misses you very much-"

"Can't miss what ya never had."

"Vera!" Toriel's eyes widened, appalled by what she'd just heard. "You know better than to say such things, especially about someone who is probably one of your relatives!"

"What? It's true!" Vera crossed her arms. "I don't remember him, and I don't really care to! I have my friends and that's all I need! How do you know this guy isn't some random creep anyway?!"

Bertha couldn't help but deadpan. "DNA and records."

         "DN-what now?"

"It's complicated." She couldn't hide a sigh this time. Vera had been a pain in the past, and it was no surprise that she was a pain now. "Basically, our records show that you, Vera Adaline-Justice Zimmerman, are the child of Larry Zimmerman, and we're giving you the chance to meet and talk with him."

She hoped what she was saying got through at least a little bit to the stubborn child, but unfortunately, Vera looked less than impressed. "Well your records are wrong, and I'm not letting you kidnap me-"

"My child." Once again, Toriel interrupted the two of them, this time stepping forward as if to overshadow Bertha's presence. "May we talk about this in a more controlled manner? A chance to hear us out, perhaps?" As the young soul stared up at her in question, the monster attempted to elaborate. "...We will not force you to meet with a man you've never met, and I understand and hear your concerns loud and clear. But, I would like for you to consider the other side, and I am content with explaining things for Mrs Ryan, alright?"

Such an offer was one that Vera couldn't help but consider, even if she felt her answer would remain the same. She didn't want to go, especially not with Bertha, but... ugh. She might as well hear her out. Otherwise she'd never hear the end of it from Via and Daya. Wait. Maybe not Via, but she would definitely be the most disappointed. And that was something that honestly left a bad taste in her mouth. "...Fine."

"Thank you." At least Toriel was nice about stuff like this. That was something Vera could... appreciate, and it was enough to allow Toriel to negotiate. Taking a deep breath, the monster started talking once more. "...Do you remember the day Frisk and I found you, when you were living on Mount Ebott in the woods?"

All Toriel received was a frown and a nod, but that was enough to continue. "I was overjoyed when I found you all alive and well... even if you did not remember me or our time together. I was not your mother then, even if I acted as such... and yet, if I was so overjoyed to find you alive, I imagine the same is true for this person."

"But I don't even know him!" Vera huffed, arms crossed as she blew a piece of her hair out of her face. "Why should I even go? Bertha's probably gonna kidnap me or something."

"I'm not going to kidnap you." The sigh that came from Bertha was one of noticeable exasperation, even if she had tried to muffle it. "My department only wants to protect kids like you and make sure you're safe and happy. But, our main goal is to unite families, to make sure everyone is happy and well, and while you do seem to be happy here, we can't ignore the pleas of a hopeful father."
