18. Poison

JARRED

Getting Jason and Tyler on the hospital beds was easy, figuring out how to help them isn't. Jarred lifts Jasons lip and finds a black line down his gums.

"Yep. It's definitely lead poisoning." He says.

Jenna took their vitals and got some blood smaples earlier. She examined them as best she could but ended up having the machine test their blood for any other problems she have missed. Jarred and Jenna look at the TV screen at their results and sigh.

"Well the good new is besides the lead running through their body they're perfectly fine." Jenna says.

"The bad news?" Jarred asks.

"I have no idea what to do. This should be impossible anyway, no one gets lead posing from a bullet this fast." She says. "And the nature of it is insane. The lead seems to be dissolving for some reason."

Jarred walks back over to Jason and turns him over. He grabs a surgical blade from the table and pulls off his brothers shirt.

"What are you doing?" Jenna asks.

"Testing my theory." He asnwers cutting open Jasons bruised flesh.

From inside the terrible blue black colour of lead comes pouring out like puss from a pimple.

"Is that?"

"The bullet. You were right , it just dissolved." Jarred says.

His mind flashes back to the car and all it's bullet holes. He runs outside as fast as he can and searches it's body. Most of the bullets must have fallen off or bounced off the car ages ago. But luckily he finds one that smashed through the tail light and got trapped inside.

"What are you doing with that?" Jenna asks when he gets back in the med bay.

Jarred grabs two beakers and labels them A and B. He cleans the same surgical blade and runs its sharp end down his palm causing blood to come spilling out into beaker A. He then goes over to Jason and does the same to his hand filling beaker B with his blood. He places the breakers side by side and turns to Jenna.

"Watch" he says dropping the bullet into beaker A.

It sits in his blood not reacting to it at all. But when he pulls it out and drops into beaker B, it instantly starts to melt in Jasons blood like a stone dropped in acid.

"Holy shit." Jenna says." Their blood is like acid for lead."

"Yep. I'm betting mr creepy and his posse knew that. I mean how come with all those trained men shooting bullets like rain drops in a storm you and I weren't shot even once and they have three bullets each." Jarred says turning to Jason and Tyler.

"It was planned. They didn't want to waste them because they knew what their blood does to lead. Like instantly poisoning them." Jenna says.

"Exactly." Jarred adds.

"But that still doesn't help our situation." Jenna frowns.

"Jen don't you see. If they knew that the blood of a member of the infected can do this then-"

"His done experiments...which means he must have found someone like them." Jenna finishes Jarreds thought.

JENNA

The machine continues to purr softly as it cleans out Jason and Tylers blood. It's a prototype that mom and dad have been designing for years, they found it downstairs after Tyler stumbled on an elevator that lead to another secret floor beneath the med bay. They didn't have time to explore it much. But after looking through the computer they found down there they saw the machines blueprints and decided to give it a shot.
